WWE Hell in a Cell 2011 Preview: Predictions You Can Take to the Bank
What's up, ladies and gentlemen? My name is Eric Kanes and I am back here today with my monthly (or almost weekly, in this case) pay-per-view preview. I will break things down and give the realistic odds for each match.
This month, I'll have my buddies, RiZE and Buzz M. joining me so there will be three different viewpoints on every match.
Make sure to add me on Facebook for daily wrestling discussion and to keep up with all of my latest columns.
Now, without any further ado, let's get this show on the road!
Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger
1 of 8Eric Kanes: This match has not been officially announced yet but with only five matches on the card as of now, this seems like a done deal. This will also likely be the opener due to the fast-paced styles of all four of these guys. Which duo will pick up the win? Let's find out.
RiZE: Before I start, I’d like to be the first to ask why Dolph and Jack are teaming up after their history. If my memory serves me right, Jack Swagger has been screwed out of the U.S. Championship and numerous matchups by Dolph Ziggler. And to think, this was just a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, I think it’ll be a great match style wise as each of these four individuals possesses exceptional wrestling ability. On the other hand, the finish is predictable considering the randomness of the Ziggler/Swagger pairing.
RiZE's Pick: Air Boom
Buzz M: I think controversy will strike in this match. Even though Vickie Guerrero seems to be building a stable, I think a miscommunication between Ziggler and Swagger will cost them the match. I’m not sure if they’ll split, but I see them losing and further pushing the conspiracy angle with the other superstars who joined them. Air Boom to win.
Buzz's Pick: Air Boom
Eric Kanes: Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger defeated Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne on RAW so, knowing WWE, this will likely be for the tag team championship. However, that technically should also mean that Zack Ryder should get another U.S. title shot on Raw which seems to be the direction WWE is going.
So here's what I think will happen—Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger cost each other the match here. Then on Raw, Jack Swagger helps Zack Ryder defeat Dolph Ziggler to become the new champion. This then leads to a Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger match at Vengeance, with Jack Swagger turning face. Or maybe I'm overthinking things and Air Boom will just get the clean win.
Eric's Pick: Air Boom
Kelly Kelly (c) vs. Beth Phoenix
2 of 8RiZE: I would’ve bet my right arm on Beth Phoenix defeating Kelly Kelly at WWE Night of Champions. Here we are, almost two weeks later and Beth is taking on Kelly once again. To be honest, I don’t think a win by Beth would trigger any drastic change, but it’s time for Kelly to drop that Divas title. Then again, you never know with the WWE as they’ll use the most ridiculous excuse to explain Kelly’s title retention. Something like Kelly is finally getting over as Divas Champion...Oh, wait.
RiZE's Pick: Beth Phoenix
Buzz M: I can’t predict the winner here. It’s obvious by now that Kelly is the new golden Diva, so a win would not surprise me. But still, I can’t see Beth falling for the roll-up pin for a third time. I guess the Divas of Doom vs. Kelly and Eve rivalry will go on for a while unless Kelly wins and Eve challenges here next. Anyway, without any explanation, I predict a win for Beth.
Buzz's Pick: Beth Phoenix
Eric Kanes: My prediction—Kelly is going to come out smiling and holding the title in the air like an idiot. Then, she's going to botch the bulldog. Then she's going to start yelling, "COME ON!" Then, Beth will finally win and end this abomination.
Eric's Pick: Beth Phoenix
Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara
3 of 8RiZE: This is probably the most interesting feud on this card. Despite the fact that promos aren’t an option, the underhanded tactics of Hunico certainly draws a decent amount of attention. Now that Hunico has acknowledged Sin’s theft of his “Mistico” persona in Mexico, it adds proper explanation to his actions.
Yes, Sin Cara did rip off the Mistico gimmick from the original Mistico, Hunico. However, Sin revolutionized Mistico and became a big hit in Mexico unlike Hunico. I can’t speak for others but I absolutely loved that they acknowledged this. It gives fans a little reality while not being too far-fetched. I expect a great match between the two with a few botches here and there. In the end, the original Sin Cara will reign supreme.
RiZE's Pick: Face Sin Cara
Buzz M: Are they going to have more than one match? If yes, then I predict a win for the fake Sin Cara in this match. I only hope we get great matches and it will be better if a manager gets involved.
Buzz's Pick: Heel Sin Cara
Eric Kanes: They'll definitely end up having more than one match since I think that this is leading to a blow-off Mask vs. Mask match when they're in Mexico in a few weeks. That's probably why they're doing this in the first place and introducing the "Mistico" persona to the feud, since that is a big name in Mexico. With that said, the evil Sin Cara will have to win here with the original one picking up the win in Mexico.
Eric's Pick: Heel Sin Cara
Mark Henry (c) vs. Randy Orton
4 of 8RiZE: Does anyone else feel that even though Mark Henry is the world champion, Randy Orton is still the TRUE world champion? For example, Mark Henry had to defend his championship against Christian to determine who would face Orton at Hell in a Cell. It’s like Henry was fighting for a shot at Orton’s title. Anyway, Henry just won the title two weeks ago and it would be extremely foolish for Orton to win the title back so quickly.
RiZE's Pick: Mark Henry
Buzz M: Mark Henry can finally be called the World’s Strongest Man without question. I think Henry will win. Cody Rhodes has been complaining about Randy Orton injuring him without being punished. So he might interfere and cost him the match.
Buzz's Pick: Mark Henry
Eric Kanes: Yeah, I think it's safe to say that Mark Henry could pick up the win here, although I think this might be a dark horse candidate for "Match of the Night." It'll probably be an all out brawl, which is perfect for Hell in a Cell. The SmackDown following Mark Henry's title win scored the highest rating since The Rock's return. Coincidence? I don't think so. WWE has put a lot of effort into pushing Mark Henry and it's paying off. With that said, I doubt that he'll be losing the title any time soon.
Eric's Pick: Mark Henry
Sheamus vs. Christian
5 of 8RiZE: This is undoubtedly the most properly built matchup on this card. Why? This feud has been brewing for quite some time now. In turn, it makes it difficult to decide the winner. Nonetheless, this will be a great matchup but I’m going to take the safe route and say the Great White wins.
RiZE's Pick: Sheamus
Buzz M: I believe that this match will give us the next No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, and I think it’s Sheamus's time. I predict a win for him over Christian, who will continue with his new “one more match” gimmick.
Buzz's Pick: Sheamus
Eric Kanes: While I do think that this could be a really good match since it's two of the better workers going head to head, I have to disagree with RiZE here. I don't even know why these guys are having a match. This has pretty much just turned into two crazy guys fighting for no reason every week. WWE could have done a better job building this up. Either way, I've got to go with Sheamus here. This feud isn't strong enough to go for another three weeks.
Eric's Pick: Sheamus
John Cena (c) vs. CM Punk vs. Alberto Del Rio
6 of 8RiZE: Am I the only one who doesn’t care about the winner of this matchup? To be completely honest, I have absolute no interest in this feud whatsoever. It has had a nice build up but I can’t get into this three way feud for the life of me. Maybe it’s because the same three guys have been feuding over the WWE Championship for a few months. Anyway, John Cena said he was going to win and his word is practically gospel nowadays.
RiZE's Pick: John Cena
Buzz M: Even though I don’t prefer it, this match might witness more than one interference. I won’t ramble about this match and I can’t really predict a winner. Cena losing in two weeks looks silly but we have seen worse reigns before. I’ll just toss the name randomly. Alberto Del Rio will win after some chaos.
Buzz's Pick: Alberto Del Rio
Eric Kanes: This should be a good match as multi-man Hell in a Cell matches are always fun but yeah, the build up to this match has been weak. We know that CM Punk's not winning because you can expect the conspiracy storyline to continue. We know that Alberto Del Rio's not winning because he never should've won in the first place and WWE realizes what a mistake that was. That leaves us with only one viable option.
Eric's Pick: John Cena
Bonus Questions
7 of 8As always, here are some bonus questions for my readers:
Which match should be added to the card?
RiZE: I think a match for the Intercontinental Championship should be on the card. Besides, there’s no other feud on SmackDown or Raw so it would be intelligent to start one spontaneously through a Cody Rhodes promo. It’s sad that guys like John Morrison and Daniel Bryan won’t be on the card.
Buzz M: I have no specific match in mind, but I would love to see Wade Barret, Daniel Bryan, and Zack Ryder get a match.
Eric Kanes: There's no match in particular so I'll be a bit creative. Nobody actually believes that The Miz and R-Truth are fired so I'll pretend they never were. Instead of firing them, Triple H just fines them and puts them in a tag team submission match against Daniel Bryan and Ezekiel Jackson. Daniel Bryan makes them tap out, making him look strong and furthering the "conspiracy" storyline at the same time.
However, I don't think there will be any matches added. There'll probably just be a John Laurinaitis promo where he says, "Executive Vice President of Talent Relations" multiple times.
With only two weeks of build up, how do you think this PPV do in terms of buyrates?
RiZE: To be honest, I think the numbers will be very disappointing. The programming has been pretty good but not to the point where I would purchase this PPV.
Buzz M: I’m sure that most people who bought Night of Champions won’t buy this PPV but the buyrates might not sink as I believe another set of people will buy it, especially those who like Hell in a Cell matches. I’m not saying the buyrates will be very high, though.
Eric Kanes: Two weekly pay-per-views just don't work in general. I still don't get why they don't have four weeks in between SummerSlam and Night of Champions and three weeks in between Night of Champions and Hell in a Cell.
Which match will steal the show?
RiZE: Christian vs. Sheamus, CM Punk vs. Cena vs. Del Rio, or Air Boom vs. Swagger/Ziggler.
Buzz M: The triple threat match for the WWE Title will steal the show. Punk and Cena can work great matches together. Del Rio and Cena had a good match at Night of Champion. Del Rio and Punk showed that they can work together too so all three competitors can put on a great match together. I only hope that the match doesn’t become messy if any interference occurs.
Eric Kanes: Either the Triple Threat or Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton. Tough to say, because the triple threat will probably feature a lot of unique spots but it might be ruined by interference whereas Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton will probably just be a straight-up brawl with possibly some interference by Cody Rhodes. It's a toss-up between these two.
Will you be ordering this PPV?
RiZE: No, I’ll probably read the results but the programming just doesn’t bring out the slightest of interest in me.
Buzz M: No. I have it for free where I live.
Eric Kanes: I wasn't planning to but I probably will end up buying it because I've got nothing else going on on Sunday. Not like it can be any worse than Night of Champions, anyway.
