Kenny Britt Injury: 5 Waiver Wire Pickups to Replace the Wide Receiver

Tim KeeneySep 26, 2011

With news that Kenny Britt is now out for the season, a lot of fantasy teams just got a lot thinner at the wide receiver position.

Fortunately, more NFL teams seem to be concentrating on the passing game this year, and there are plenty of receiving options available to replace Britt.

Here's a look at five guys who are likely available and could do an admirable job helping your team.

Nate Washington (8.6 Percent Owned)

1 of 5

Even when Kenny Britt was in the lineup Nate Washington was developing good chemistry with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck

In the first two weeks Washington totaled 13 catches for 166 yards, and without Britt for much of Week 3, he pulled in eight balls for 92 yards and a touchdown.

With Britt out and with the running game struggling, Washington will remain a large part of this offense. He's the clear No. 1 with not a lot of other options in sight.

Washington should see somewhere around 10 targets per game from here on out, and he's got the talent to do a lot with that.

Torrey Smith (0.2 Percent Owned)

2 of 5

After failing to record a catch in his first two NFL games, Torrey Smith got the call to start Week 3 for the injured Lee Evans.

Boy, did he respond in a big way.

Smith hauled in five catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns against a St. Louis secondary that couldn't seem to catch up to him.

The second-round pick out of Maryland possesses tremendous speed and a lot of big-play ability.

Still, there are some things not working in his favor.

First, Evans will probably only miss one more game (at most) going forward, and when he's back, he'll eat into Smith's playing time.

Second, the Ravens probably won't throw it 48 times in most games like they did in Week 3.

And lastly, Smith was largely inconsistent during preseason. Don't expect him to do something like this every week.

Smith is a nice pickup as he's surely established himself in this offense, but I'd lower your expectations on him just a tad.

Dexter McCluster (40 Percent Owned)

3 of 5

Dexter McCluster plays both running back and wide receiver, and thus has eligibility at both positions. For the Chiefs, he is existent in both aspects of the game.

In Week 3 against the Chargers, McCluster carried the ball nine times for 45 yards and caught another five balls for 17 yards.

McCluster was once again much more explosive than Thomas Jones. He'll never shoulder a full workload, but you can expect 10 carries and 5-6 targets for the little guy out of Mississippi.

McCluster is even more valuable in PPR leagues, but his multi-faceted game makes him a nice flex play in most leagues.

David Nelson (27.6 Percent)

4 of 5

Perhaps this is the week David Nelson and the Bills finally get the respect they deserve.

Buffalo has a high-powered offense, and fantasy owners would be smart to jump on their bandwagon and own anyone who will contribute.

Coming into the year, there were question marks as to who would step up after Fred Jackson and Stevie Johnson, but it's becoming clear that Nelson will be that guy.

The second-year man out of Florida has already tallied 27 targets, good for 13th-most in the league, and he's pulled in 20 of those for 233 yards in three weeks.

Buffalo loves to spread the field, so Nelson is out there a lot. He should continue getting somewhere around eight targets and six catches a game. At 6'5", he's also a nice red-zone target for Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Antonio Brown (4.6 Percent)

5 of 5

Mike Wallace is clearly the No. 1 threat in the passing game for the Steelers, but it appears that Antonio Brown has hopped Hines Ward as the No. 2.

Brown led the Steelers in targets in Week 3 with eight, and that gives him 14 for the last two weeks. It seems more and more that he is Big Ben's "guy" on third downs.

In Week 2, Brown caught four passes all for first downs, and he now has five first-down catches on third down, which is tied for fifth-most in the NFL.

Brown should be a constant 5-6-catch guy for somewhere around 60 yards per game, and he should be owned in more than five percent of leagues.
