Waiver-Wire Pickups Week 4: 2011 NFL Fantasy Football Roster Advice

Sean E. DouglasSep 25, 2011

While there were still some wild games around the league, the injuries are starting to add up. Receiver Kenny Britt is likely gone for the year and Frank Gore is down with an ankle injury. Michael will likely miss some time as well, after suffering another injury this past week against New York.

Let’s take a look at some players who can help your squad now and in the future.

Mike Kafka

With Michael Vick suffering a broken right hand (he's a left-handed thrower, though) and still showing ill-effects from his concussion last week, it’s likely the Eagles will go with Mike Kafka against the 49ers. This is a solid matchup for Kafka; he shouldn’t have a problem exploiting San Francisco’s suspect secondary.

Jason Campbell

The Raiders are for real and head coach Hue Jackson has the team looking like an offense that is ready to emerge as the weeks go by. With Darren McFadden looking like an All-Pro running back, expect the Raiders to finally use an effective deep passing game, with rookie Denarius Moore looking like one of the better young receivers in the game.

All this success and Jacoby Ford hasn’t been on the field since a Week 1 hamstring injury sidelined him. It’s time to get Campbell on your depth chart. If you're hurting for a quarterback, Campbell makes for an interesting upside play against the Patriots in Week 4.

Bernard Scott

With Cedric Benson set to serve a three-game suspension, the Bengals will go with Bernard Scott as the team's starting tailback. This week the Bengals face off against the Bills. Scott makes for a flex-play option, especially in PPR leagues.

Kendall Hunter

Frank Gore injured his ankle against the Bengals and rookie Kendall Hunter came in and scored the 49ers' game-winning touchdown. Hunter looked good; his shifty running style could make him an interesting flex play against the Eagles if Gore should be sidelined this week.

Keep Hunter on your squad—he’s the team's No.2 back and, with Gore’s injury-prone ways, he will see more opportunities this year.

Torrey Smith

Wow! Torrey Smith received a chance to start with Lee Evans out (his ankle injury has plagued him since the middle of August). Smith went on to post three touchdowns in the first half of the game against the Rams. It will be interesting to see if the Ravens give Evans extra rest this coming week.

Smith may have consistency issues, but if Evans or Boldin should go down for an extended amount of time, Smith would make for an option as a WR-3 play.

Victor Cruz

With Mario Manningham out of the lineup after suffering a concussion against the Rams, Victor Cruz stepped up in a big game against the Eagles for over 100 yards and two long touchdown receptions. We’ve seen Cruz play well in the preseason for a couple of years now, but it looks like he’s ready to make a regular impact for the Giants; he will up Eli Manning’s fantasy value.

Consider Cruz a respectable WR-3 play against the Cardinals next week, even if Manningham is back. This is basically because the Cardinals are horrible against the pass and I expect the Giants to have a big offensive weekend.
