Week 3 NFL Picks: Which Heavyweights Will Roll Opposition?

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

The San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers both entered the season as favorites to compete for the AFC championship. Despite suffering early defeats, much is still expected from both squads, and they should show why on Sunday, as each team should roll it's opponent.

The Chargers lost to the New England Patriots in Week 2, as they shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. Philip Rivers and his offense turned the ball over four times in the 35-21 defeat. Despite not taking care of the football, the team's offense still put up big numbers.

San Diego (1-1) hosts the hapless Kansas City Chiefs (0-2) on Sunday and the Chargers should have an easy walk in the park in this one. The Bolts currently boast the NFL's third-best offense (438.5 yards per game), but are only averaging 22.5 points per game. Obviously, that number needs to get better, and the Chiefs may provide the solution.

Kansas City is surrendering a ridiculous 44.5 points per game, which is by far the worst in the NFL. On top of that, the Chiefs have lost their two best players—Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles—for the season with torn ACLs. They are still reeling from those losses and there is no reason to think the Chargers won't destroy them on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) suffered an embarrassing 35-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. Though they managed to regain a small measure of confidence with a 24-0 Week 2 beat down of the Seattle Seahawks, the Steelers are still looking to erase the memory of that opening-week debacle.

Sunday night Pittsburgh travels to Indianapolis to face a Colts (0-2) team still trying to figure out if it can win without Peyton Manning. Here's a hint: they can't.

Sunday night should be a perfect chance to the Steelers to get their running game going. Against Indianapolis' soft front seven, Pittsburgh should be able to ride running back Rashard Mendenhall to an easy victory.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger should be able to take advantage of the Colts stacking the line to stop Mendenhall, and if he does, this game could get ugly fast.

The Colts have always won by controlling the game with their offense. After two weeks with Kerry Collins at the helm, it's clear they can't win that way this year. There is no reason to believe their defense can step up and earn them a win, so the Steelers will roll in this one.
