WWE: Why Attitude Era Throwbacks and the End of the PG Era Won't Save WWE

Kaleb KelchnerJun 7, 2018

The Monday Night Wars created a wrestling fan's delight back in the late 90's.

It was truly an incredible time to be a fan, and the Attitude Era that spawned from it created some of the greatest, most memorable stars in the history of professional wrestling.

That said, it wasn't all compelling, entertaining or even funny. Some of it was awkward, strange and downright weird.

Mark Henry was in an angle with Mae Young during his Sexual Chocolate gimmick that saw him impregnate her, with her eventually giving birth to a hand!

No, not everything was golden during the Attitude Era, but we sure are quick to forget.

Fans are just as quick to blame WWE's dull product on the PG Era, which lacks blood, cussing and edgy angles. Let me make this very, very clear, the "era" we are in has very little to do with the quality of the product.

Sensible booking and compelling writing is what can "save the WWE," not lifted restrictions on cheap tricks and gimmicks.

If WWE can't do PG right, what do you think would happen if they weren't as restricted?  It's a two way road, and WWE creative has a knack for going the wrong way, or at least, that is the case lately.

Rather than looking to the past for answers, whether it be by bringing back Superstars of yesteryear, or by resorting to "edgy" (read: raunchy) angles and graphic segments, we as fans need to throw our lot in with forward thinking minds who want to forge their own path and leave their own unique mark on Professional Wrestling.

We may be witnessing change right now—change for the better. Ratings aren't looking hot, but some changes are taking place that inspires a little bit of faith in WWE. One has to hope that those in power at WWE embrace it.
