NFL Predictions Week 3: Which Players Will Earn Rookie of the Year Consideration

John RozumSep 23, 2011

When a rookie steps up big in a game, it is an enormous boost to the confidence of the team.

When a rookie does that on a consistent basis throughout the season, it gives the fans and the organization confidence for the immediate future.

So far the following three rookies have done that for their respective teams and should earn Rookie of the Year consideration right now.

Cam Newton: QB, Carolina Panthers

As if you're not surprised by this. Carolina's Cam Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, has played extremely well for being thrown into the fire.

He's proven every skeptic wrong and rightfully so, as he's been doing that ever since Auburn head coach Gene Chizik put him under center.

Newton has transitioned very well from college to the NFL. He has quickly learned that in order to be a successful QB in the pros, becoming a pocket passer first is crucial.

His unreal athleticism will pay-off down the road when he's a seasoned vet and the decision-making comes more quickly.

Right now, though, let's enjoy the moment of watching him, because the developmental stages are what bode well for a prominent future.

He is the leading candidate.

Ryan Kerrigan: OLB, Washington Redskins

In college, he was a two-time All-American, and for his career he forced 14 fumbles (tied for first all-time in college football history).

It's no wonder why the Redskins drafted Ryan Kerrigan out of Purdue with the No. 16 overall pick.

Putting him opposite an already established pass-rusher in Brian Orakpo has paid off thus far and will continue to do so.

After only two games, Kerrigan has accounted for eight tackles, one sack and three pass deflects, one of which he returned for a TD.

Ryan is the real deal coming off the edge in our nation's capital, and he's one of the biggest reasons why the Redskins are 2-0.

He will keep it rolling, so expect him to be in the Rookie of the Year race, while his Redskins are in the playoff race.

Von Miller: OLB, Denver Broncos

The No. 2 overall pick and the highest in the history of the Denver Broncos, OLB Von Miller has significantly improved the Denver defense in 2011.

Thus far, he has compiled eight tackles, one sack, one forced fumble (on his first defensive play, mind you) and two pass deflects.

He's a little bit better in coverage than advertised, but his pass-rushing ability is second-to-none.

Right now, he has arguably the most potential out of anyone on that improving defense. In the years to come, he will become the focal point of their success.

As for his rookie year, however, it will be tough competing against Newton and Kerrigan. However, considering how well he's played thus far, he can really emerge in Week 3 if the Broncos shut down Titans RB Chris Johnson.
