Fantasy Football Trades: 5 Overachieving Players You Must Move Now

Jun 7, 2018

Contrary to fantasy baseball, I've always found it to be very, very difficult to make trades in fantasy football. I figure this has something to do with how there are only so many dependable players to go around.

Luckily, making fantasy football trades is a simple matter of identifying the guys who are being a little too dependable. Instead of trusting these overachievers to continue producing, often times the best idea is to send them to other owners who value them too highly.

They call this "selling high." No doubt you've heard the term.

With that in mind, below is a list of five guys you should sell high.

5. Eric Decker, WR, Denver Broncos

Whoever actually bothered to start Eric Decker this past weekend was rewarded in a big way, as Decker caught five passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns against the Cincinnati Bengals.

If you did start Decker, well played, sir. Now you should move him before it's too late.

Listen, guys have fluky games all the time, and there's a reason why Decker had his on Sunday. Brandon Lloyd was unable to play with a groin injury, forcing Kyle Orton to find a new go-to guy.

As soon as Lloyd comes back, he'll be Orton's go-to guy again, so don't expect Orton's love affair with Decker to continue. Instead, see if somebody else in your league is foolish enough to think it will.

4. Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo Bills

Fred Jackson is currently leading the league in rushing with 229 yards through two games, and his efforts have overshadowed those of Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in some fantasy owners' eyes.

But alas, I just don't trust Jackson. He's racked up his yards against two bad defensive teams in the Kansas City Chiefs in Oakland Raiders, and that much is reflected in the fact that Jackson is averaging 6.5 yards per rush.

That's just not going to last. Jackson will flirt with 1,000 yards when all is said and done, but I think it's a good idea to try and spin him for a high-ceiling guy like Chris Johnson or Rashard Mendenhall.

3. Jahvid Best, RB, Detroit Lions

Stop me if you've heard this before, but Jahvid Best has been an outstanding producer in the first two weeks of the season, as he has totaled 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The reason that may sound familiar is because Best got off to a great start in Detroit's first two games last season too. Then his health fell apart, and the numbers stopped coming.

I understand if you don't want to see a trend here, but take it from me that Best is an injury risk. He hasn't had a healthy season since 2008, when he was still at Cal.

So my advice is to play it safe before Best gets hurt.

2. Kenny Britt, WR, Tennessee Titans

Lost in the shuffle of CJ's struggles is the connection that has developed between Matt Hasselbeck and Kenny Britt. 'Tis a mighty connection, as Britt has already caught 14 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

Because Britt is going to be Hasselbeck's go-to guy all season, Britt will continue to produce. But once Johnson starts to pick it up, the Titans will not have to take to the air as much. Britt's numbers will come down as a result.

There are all sorts of dependable wide receivers that haven't started producing yet. See if you can't trade Britt for one of them, preferably the guy with the highest ceiling. Larry Fitzgerald comes to mind.

1. Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers

You can count me among the people who thought Cam Newton was going to struggle mightily in his first NFL season. In case you're wondering, I have eaten my words and rest assured they don't taste good.

That said, Newton is going to have to come back down to earth at some point. He's on pace to break Dan Marino's record for passing yards in a single season, and that's just not going to happen.

Here's the other thing about Newton: I think very few people actually drafted him with plans of using him as a starter. He has certainly earned the right to be your starter, but you must have another guy on your bench who is just as capable of being your starting quarterback.

If you do, trade Newton for a skill player. If you don't, trade Newton for another quarterback. He is the ultimate sell-high candidate.
