NFL Picks Week 3: Which Teams Are Guaranteed to Lose?

Ryan PhillipsSep 22, 2011

The Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs are currently locked in a battle for the title of worst team in the NFL.

While all three teams have made excellent cases for themselves, Week 3 will allow each squad to distinguish itself even more.

However, while the Seahawks have a chance at home against the Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis and Kansas City fans should get used to the idea of cheering for an 0-3 team.

The Colts host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, and this one could hurt. The Steelers looked terrible during Week 1, in a 35-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Last week, they redeemed themselves a little bit with a 24-0 thrashing of Seattle. This weekend, they face a Colts squad that's looked completely lost without star quarterback Peyton Manning.

The Colts are 0-2 thanks to losses to the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns to open the season. Neither of those teams is as good as the Steelers can be, so I can't help but think Indianapolis will be in serious trouble on Sunday night.

The Steelers are sure to exploit the Colts' biggest weakness defensively, which is their 29th-ranked run defense (136.5 yards per game). Expect Pittsburgh to pound the ball early and often with Rashard Mendenhall on the way to an easy win.

The Kansas City Chiefs look like a broken franchise at this point. After two weeks, they have been outscored 89-10, lost their two best players for the season (Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles) and go on the road to face a San Diego Chargers team primed for a breakout.

The Chiefs have the NFL's worst passing offense (110.5 yards per game) and that's really the only way they could hope to beat the Chargers. With no passing attack and Charles out, the offense will likely be as anemic as it has been all year.

Meanwhile, the Chargers are primed to finally convert all the offense they've generated (438.5 yards per game) into points. They've struggled taking advantage of opportunities in their first two games—especially in their 35-21 loss in Week 2 to the New England Patriots—but there is a sense of things finally coming together for the Bolts. That's bad news for Kansas City.

If you're picking games this weekend, you can bank on the fact that the Colts and Chiefs have zero shot at coming away with victories.
