Billy Beane: Moneyball, What Will Be in Movie and What Will Be Left Out?

Gean MayJun 3, 2018

Honestly, I don't know the answer to that question.

When a book gets adapted to the big screen, it is very rarely an exact replica. This is usually done for entertainment purposes.

One would guess that this would be the case in "Moneyball," due to the fact that the book is based on a concept and it is not a story as much as it is a road map to that concept.

There are storylines in the book, but it remains a mystery on which ones will make it into the movie.

Although, the trailer does give us a peek on what writer Aaron Sorkin chose to take from the Michael Lewis best seller.

Following is what I will be looking for in the movie.

How Art Howe Is Portrayed

1 of 7

How Art Howe is portrayed is very intriguing to me.

The word on the street is that he comes off as grumpy and kind of mean. This may be true, but if the writer uses information from the book, the Grumpy Art Howe should only appear when he is dealing with Billy Beane.

The Book indicates that Beane doesn't really think he needs a manager and also touches on how Beane directs him on how to look and where to stand in the dugout, basically treating him like somewhat of a middle management puppet.

It will be interesting to see if these aspects of the book are included.

How Far Will Movie Go with Temper Tantrums?

2 of 7

Billy Beane's temper is no secret.

We see him in the trailer tipping over a desk, so the movie will definitely show this part of Beane's personality.

My question is, how far will writer Aaron Sorkin take it?

Will he show the infamous bat breaking episodes Beane would perform in the minor leagues?

We shall see.

Jonah Hill's Character

3 of 7

Actor Jonah Hill plays Peter Brand in the movie Moneyball.

When I first read about the movie, I was lost. I, of course, had no Idea who Peter Brand was.

The character is supposed to be a mixture of a few different people that helped Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta with their new strategy.

From what I have heard, DePodesta is mainly where the Brand Character came from.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out on the big screen.

Billy Beane's Personal Life

4 of 7

The Book touches on Beanes personnel life a little, but does not go into too much detail.

The trailer looks as though it will at least show us Beane's relationship with his daughter. It will be interesting to see how much access the audience has into this aspect of Beane's life.

Beane's Friendship with Lenny Dykstra

5 of 7

It looks as though the movie is going to stick with what goes on with Beane and the Oakland A's.

The book does, however, go into great detail about Beane's time in the minor leagues. It talks about his friendship with Lenny Dykstra and goes as far as chronicling their time together, whether it be in the dugout talking about Steve Carlton or Dykstra warning him about reading too much and and how it will ruin his eyes.

I havn't heard about a Lenny Dykstra character in the movie, but maybe we'll get a surprise.

The Draft and Nick Swisher

6 of 7

This is my favorite part of the book. It was basically all access before the draft and on draft day.

This aspect of the book tells us what Billy Beane is all about. From the way he deals with the other GM's to how he treats his scouts, this is all gold to me.

I hope it shows up in the film.

The David Justice Experiment

7 of 7

The book talks about how Beane brought in long time veteran David Justice as an experiment.

Obviously, there is a Justice character in the movie. I wonder just how much Justice they will portray?

The trailer shows him trying to buy a soda, and when he finds out it's a dollar, the look on his face is priceless.

The book talks about him in the film room studying pitchers and his interaction with other players watching tape.

I would like to see more on Justice and how he compares the A's situation to his time with other clubs.
