MLB Rumors: Aramis Ramirez and the Chicago Cubs Are Poised to Cut Ties-Good

Jeff ChaseSep 21, 2011

Aramis Ramirez has been the Chicago Cubs third baseman through the majority of the Cubs' success over the last nine seasons. There is no doubt that Ramirez has been one of the more streaky players in the MLB, but no matter what, he has always been highly regarded as one of the more dangerous hitters.

When Ramirez wants to turn it on, he is arguably one of the best. Unfortunately, most of the time, he just looks like he doesn't want to be out there.

Why is this? Is it because he doesn't enjoy the game? Because he has had some managers who end up not caring? Perhaps he can't withstand an entire season.

Whatever the reason is, Ramirez has been getting paid a lot of money, and when you look back at it all, he has wasted a lot of the Cubs' money in the process.

Ramirez can hit the long ball, and he is typically an RBI machine. Something just isn't working though. It just isn't consistent enough that Ramirez should be seriously considered a piece the Chicago Cubs need when they are poised to change their franchise.

I am a huge Aramis Ramirez fan, and I always liked to think he would stay and play great like the times he did. But when I read today that Aramis believes this will be his last season in Chicago, I felt a lot of weight lifted off of my back.

It was a relief, and this is why.

Ramirez has always shown potential, and when it proved itself, fans were excited. All those slumps and injuries outweigh the possibility of Ramirez being the star he could be.

Ramirez would expect a lot of money, but, some may ask, why should he? Well, he has that potential. In the end, though, I believe the Cubs have figured that they have tinkered around a little too long to give the Ramirez experiment another go.

There is no way the Chicago Cubs are going to fork over $16 million to Ramirez for him to have yet another roller-coaster year. The Chicago Cubs have already learned their lesson with players like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano.

I mean, if the Cubs are going to give a single player around $16 million, I would rather see it given to a player like Jose Reyes. Reyes, Starlin Castro or Darwin Barney could occupy third.

The Cubs could also look at their up and coming players. It is really a guessing game at this point in time.

This all depends, though, on what the Cubs decide to spend their "extra" money on. Perhaps it will go towards a stud at third, or maybe it will be used on Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols.

Who knows, and who knows if the Cubs will really part ways with Ramirez. Everything is unpredictable when your team doesn't even have a general manager.

Whoever takes over that GM spot will have a lot of decisions to make. The Cubs have a ton of holes to already fill—starting at pitching, then first base and now potentially third base.

Who knows though, Ramirez may be being this outspoken because he is fed up with the Chicago Cubs and their horrible season. Also, there is the fact that he has not been offered a new contract or any word on his option. He may look back at today and decide it was a mistake and he was just frustrated and this is how he decided to fume it.

That being said, now that Ramirez has finally decided it would be his best interest to test out free agency, the Chicago Cubs should make it their best interest to move on and build for the future.
