NFL Picks Week 3: Against the Spread Trends You Need to Know for All 32 Teams

Jeff GrantSep 21, 2011

Sports bettors are always looking for a powerful trend to add strength to their selections each and every week.

Sometimes, it's as simple as how a team performs at home or on the road.

My job as the Bleacher Report's sports betting guru is to provide you the absolute best trend that will supply you confidence in backing any of the 32 teams this weekend.

Let's go inside and state a case for each NFL squad heading into Week 3 from a betting perspective.

Jacksonville Jaguars

1 of 32

The Jacksonville Jaguars are four-point road underdogs against the Carolina Panthers this week.  A pair of rookie quarterbacks will be facing off inside Bank of America Stadium.

Bettors will be happy to know that head coach Jack Del Rio packs a punch when getting less than a touchdown in September, posting a 9-1 ATS mark.

Definitely a dangerous NFL underdog in Week 4.

Carolina Panthers

2 of 32

The Carolina Panthers are 0-2 to start the season, but the Cam Newton Show has lifted the franchise's spirits.

It's tough to find a worthy betting trend with a rookie coach and quarterback for any NFL team.

Bettors may elect to play against their opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are 2-6 ATS as a road underdog of 3.5 to 10 points.

Denver Broncos

3 of 32

The Denver Broncos came away with a 24-22 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week, but failed to deliver for backers as 3.5-point home favorites.

First-year head coach John Fox will definitely be happy with his team's ability to cover the spread against this week's opponent.

Denver is 3-0 ATS in the last three meetings, including a 26-20 win as six-point road underdogs a year ago.

Tennessee Titans

4 of 32

The Tennessee Titans scored a major upset last week, with a 26-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens as 5.5-point home underdogs.

Quite a first win for Mike Munchak, who replaced long-time head coach Jeff Fisher, serving as his offensive line coach before being handed the job.

Bettors love backing this team in the NFL's first month, coming into this contest with a 12-4 ATS record in September.

Houston Texans

5 of 32

The Houston Texans are one of eight remaining teams that have not dropped a game against the spread, coming in with victories over the Indianapolis Colts (34-7) and Miami Dolphins (23-13).

The Lone Star State's best team is also 16-6 ATS when playing the second game of back-to-back road games.

That fits nicely in a possible shootout against the New Orleans Saints, as the team is also 10-2 ATS as underdogs when scoring 17 points or more.

New Orleans Saints

6 of 32

The New Orleans Saints defense was embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers in the season opener, but things turned around in facing the Chicago Bears last week.

Head coach Sean Payton becomes a very aggressive play-caller when his stop unit is playing well, as the team is 8-1 ATS in their last nine games after allowing less than 250 total yards in their previous game.

Detroit Lions

7 of 32

Years of futility has led to the Detroit Lions being undervalued in the betting market, as the team is 14-3 ATS since the start of the 2010 regular season.

One of the eight teams that has lined bettors' pockets with cash in the first two weeks and the only one to also post a perfect ATS mark during the preseason.

Minnesota Vikings

8 of 32

The Minnesota Vikings are getting points in front of their home fans against the Detroit Lions.  Quite a turn of events in the NFC North division.

Good thing for bettors this weekend, the team from the Twin Cities is 7-3 ATS as a home underdog of 3.5 to 10 points.

New York Giants

9 of 32

The New York Giants have had all kinds of trouble in this series, failing to cover the last six meetings.

Oddsmakers have yet to send out a line on this contest due to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick suffering a concussion last week.

If the boys from the Big Apple end up getting points, it's a good thing, as the underdog is 11-2 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Philadelphia Eagles

10 of 32

The Philadelphia Eagles may be able to win you cash without the services of quarterback Michael Vick, as the franchise is 6-0 ATS in their last six meetings with the New York Giants.

It also helps to have head coach Andy Reid around, as the team has won 10 consecutive Week 3 games, covering nine of them in the process.

New England Patriots

11 of 32

The New England Patriots are 7-0 ATS against the Buffalo Bills when playing on the road, winning those games by an average of 24.5 points.

It's safe to say the No. 1 team in terms of covering the spread is going to attract plenty of supporters Sunday.

Buffalo Bills

12 of 32

The Buffalo Bills came away with a come-from-behind 38-35 win over the Oakland Raiders last week, which sets them up for a good performance this week.

Bettors will find that the franchise is 29-9 ATS after winning a game by a field goal or less.

Confidence is running rampant inside the home team's locker room this week.

Miami Dolphins

13 of 32

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano should live at an airport, as he's led the team to a 17-7 ATS mark on the road in his career.

Bettors need to start partying away from South Beach.

Cleveland Browns

14 of 32

The Cleveland Browns have covered four-straight meetings with the Miami Dolphins, including a 13-10 win in last year's meeting as 5.5-point road underdogs.

Quarterback Colt McCoy has the franchise favored for the third consecutive week to start the 2011 campaign.

That's amazing in itself.

San Francisco 49ers

15 of 32

The San Francisco 49ers get away from Candlestick Park for the first time this year, but that could be a money-making situation come Sunday.

Bettors will find that the team is 6-1 ATS when playing on artificial turf.

The franchise might want to think about tearing out the grass in the Bay Area.

Cincinnati Bengals

16 of 32

The Cincinnati Bengals are a money-making machine so far with rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, and it may continue under the direction of his head coach.

Marvin Lewis is 6-0 ATS when sending his team into battle during Week 3 of the regular season.

New York Jets

17 of 32

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan isn't someone you should fade when laying points on the road, as he's compiled a 6-2 ATS mark in that role since getting the job two years ago.

Bettors will also find that the Jets are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five meetings with the Oakland Raiders.

Oakland Raiders

18 of 32

The Oakland Raiders are one of the powerful eight NFL teams that have yet to drop a game against the spread, which is an impressive feat under first-year head coach Hue Jackson.

Bettors will find that the franchise is 4-0 ATS following a straight-up loss, which happened last week in failing to hold onto three separate leads on the road against the Buffalo Bills.

Baltimore Ravens

19 of 32

The Baltimore Ravens know how to bounce back after getting whipped on the football field, posting a 7-0 ATS mark when getting out-gained by 200-plus yards in their previous game.

That was certainly the case when failing as 5.5-point road favorites against the Tennessee Titans last week.

St. Louis Rams

20 of 32

The St. Louis Rams have dropped their first two games against the spread as underdogs this year.

A turnaround could be coming due to the franchise covering three of its last four meetings with the Baltimore Ravens.

Kansas City Chiefs

21 of 32

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost both games to open up the 2011 campaign, but bettors see a glimmer of hope due to public perception.

Playing a contest against the San Diego Chargers also helps.

The Chiefs are 9-1 ATS when trying to gain revenge against a divisional foe, while also playing a contest off consecutive losses.

San Diego Chargers

22 of 32

The San Diego Chargers have registered a 6-2 ATS mark against the Kansas City Chiefs when hosting in this AFC West rivalry.

Last year's result was a 31-0 victory as 10-point home favorites, allowing just 67 yards in total offense.

Atlanta Falcons

23 of 32

The Atlanta Falcons will be more than happy to get on a plane and travel to the Sunshine State, as the road team is 5-0 ATS in their series with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Last year's trip resulted in a 28-24 win as three-point road favorites.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

24 of 32

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been a high-performing team against the spread when coming off a victory under third-year head coach Raheem Morris.

Bettors will find that the Buccaneers are 5-1 ATS following a straight-up win.

Green Bay Packers

25 of 32

The Green Bay Packers have been lining supporters pockets for years now when traveling to the Windy City, posting a 10-3 ATS mark inside Soldier Field.

That record includes a 21-14 win over the Chicago Bears as 3.5-point road favorites in last year's NFC Championship Game.

Chicago Bears

26 of 32

The Chicago Bears were humiliated in a 30-13 loss as 4.5-point road underdogs last week, but that's good news for followers in Las Vegas this weekend.

Bettors will find that the team is 4-1 ATS following a straight-up loss of 14 or more points.

Arizona Cardinals

27 of 32

The Arizona Cardinals missed out on a big opportunity to start the year 2-0, but will now face one of the league's worst performers through two weeks of action

Bettors will find that the favorite in the Arizona-Seattle series is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

Seattle Seahawks

28 of 32

The Seattle Seahawks are definitely one of the worst teams in the NFL, but land into a money-making role under head coach Pete Carroll in Week 3.

Bettors will find that Carroll's teams are 4-0-1 ATS when playing at home after dropping back-to-back contests.

Pittsburgh Steelers

29 of 32

The Pittsburgh Steelers have enjoyed playing as favorites recently, covering five-straight in that particular role entering Sunday's road contest against the Indianapolis Colts.

Bettors are also aware of the team's 24-0 win last week over the Seattle Seahawks as 13.5-point home favorites.

Indianapolis Colts

30 of 32

The Indianapolis Colts haven't been an underdog of this kind in quite some time, which may cause many to wager on the other side.

Bettors may think twice due to the team's 9-2 ATS mark when receiving 10.5 or more points.

Washington Redskins

31 of 32

The Washington Redskins are brimming with confidence and that will likely continue due to their 7-2 ATS mark in the last nine meetings with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bettors will also love the squad's perfect 4-0 ATS record in the last four meetings in the Lone Star State.

Dallas Cowboys

32 of 32

The Dallas Cowboys aren't sure if their starting quarterback will be available in this week's Monday Night Football game against the Washington Redskins.

Bettors will need to watch the line closely, but also know that "America's Team" is 11-5-1 ATS in September.
