Why MVP Candidate Justin Verlander Compares to an Elite NFL QB

Matt BowenSep 19, 2011

Justin Verlander commands and deserves immense attention from the fans, umpires and opposition this year. It's as if he's not just a major league pitcher anymore—he's a folk hero.

When trying to compare him to something that resembles an equal, only one thing comes to mind: an elite NFL quarterback.

Elite NFL QBs are worth the price of admission alone. Fans feel pride when they don that player's jersey.

They live and die with every throw, expecting greatness to seep through the quarterback's pores. Men, women and children alike marvel in their majestic hero with every snap of the football.

The team's focus begins and ends with an elite quarterback. They survey the field, call the shots and make things happen. They venerate a certain infectious aura.

Both loved and hated, an elite quarterback is admired by all.

This year, Verlander has reached that elite status, raising his game to another level. He has transformed himself from a very good pitcher to a great one. At 24-5, he is the most feared man in baseball.

There's something more to watching Verlander when he takes the hill these days—there's a certain mystique about him. One watches in absolute awe of Verlander, wondering what the 28-year-old pitcher is capable of next.

Fans are on the edge of their seats with excitement and anticipation with every pitch thrown. He is simply captivating.

He now also has a rapport with umpires. Out of respect, his prowess on the mound has earned him the power to tell umpires how he thinks the game should be called. This is a fundamental attribute of an elite NFL quarterback.

Like an elite quarterback, his impact goes far beyond the field of play. He has become a staple in the community. "Verlander's Victory for Veterans" is his way of giving back. He is the face of the Detroit Tigers and will be for years to come.

Verlander is nothing less than a field general who strives to be the best. This year he is a candidate for Cy Young, MVP and the Roberto Clemente Award. There's no reason why he shouldn't win all three.

Expect to see a Justin Verlander statue around the Comerica Park concourse in the future.
