Why the Indianapolis Colts Should Lose Every Game and Draft Andrew Luck

Jake MartinSep 19, 2011

There’s always a positive in a negative, but for the Indianapolis Colts, I can think of no greater positive than drafting Andrew Luck after losing every game of the season.

You’re either foolish or delusional to think the Colts can compete with the Houston Texans in the AFC South this year without Peyton Manning running the offense, so why not try to win the Luck sweepstakes?

The No. 1 goal in the NFL is to win and put the best team on the field right now, but there has to come a time when you think about the future of your organization.

Colts’ fans are used to having their team run by the best quarterback in the league and this is the Colts’ opportunity keep that trend going for years to come.

These are reasons the Colts should lose enough games to select Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Luck Isn’t Injury Prone

Colts’ fans are used to Manning starting week in and week out every single year while playing at the highest level possible.

Once Manning went down, the Colts’ franchise didn’t know what to do and quickly saw their season go up in smoke.

Why not bring in a physical specimen that isn’t injury-prone to lead your franchise the same way Manning has for so many years. Luck isn’t injury-prone and when defensive players hit him, they know they just hit a man.

The Colts have a history of not allowing a lot of sacks which is a credit to Manning as much as it is the offensive line.

Luck is that same quality player that can evolve into a quarterback that helps his offensive line out and stays healthy each and every year.

Talented Beyond Measure

Luck is 6’4, 235 pounds and has a cannon for an arm. Unlike the recent trend of quarterbacks coming out of college, the mechanics are already there for Luck.

Unlike Tim Tebow and Cam Newton (though, he is tearing it up right now), Luck is not a project.   When a team selects Luck, they will be taking a player that can step in immediately and be ready to play before the season.

Luck burst onto the college football scene a year ago when he completed 70.7% of his passes and had 32 touchdowns with only eight interceptions as a junior.

Luck has already proven that he can take care of the football, find the open receiver and torch the defense in college.

He’s on his way to having another brilliant year as he’s completed 67.1% of his passes and thrown eight touchdowns with only one interception so far this season.

Luck's a Brilliant Player

When Manning retires, the Colts will be without the greatest field general in the history of the NFL.

Having Manning on the field is like having your offensive coordinator adjust the play whenever the defense lines up and exploit the match-ups that are in the offense’s favor.

I can think of no reason why Luck can’t be this type of player. I mean this guy is getting his degree at Stanford University in Architectural Design.

That speaks volumes for what kind of smarts Luck possesses. Obviously, Architectural Design and reading defenses are two completely different things, but Luck’s doing his fair share of studying defenses in college as well.

Expect Manning to take Luck's knowledge to a whole different level when it comes to reading defenses.

I can think of no better predecessor for Manning

The Colts’ fanbase has been spoiled for so many years by the amazing ability of a legend and future Hall-of-Famer, so his successor has to be pretty darned good.

I had the opportunity to watch Luck live and in person at the 2011 Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La. for the second year in a row, and I was blown away by his physical attributes once again.

I interviewed ESPN analyst and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden about the talent that Luck posseses and he told me, “Luck is the greatest prospect I’ve ever studied, period.”

He went on to rave about Luck’s photographic memory and the tremendous talent he has. I know Gruden is accused of liking everybody, but that’s one heck of a compliment coming from a guy that has been around the game for so long and seen as many athletes as Gruden has.

Should the Colts enter the Luck sweepstakes and try to win it, one legend will hand the reigns over to a future legend when the time comes.
