2011 Get 'em or Don't Sweat 'em Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Advice: Week 3

Ryan LesterSep 19, 2011

There were some unusual heroes on Sunday. There always are. Let’s take a look at them and see if they are worthy of your fantasy rosters.

Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Tennessee Titans

Hasselbeck completed 30-of-42 passes for 358 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He is dialed in with Kenny Britt.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers

If you didn’t add Newton after his 422-yard debut, you will want to add him after he threw for 432 in Week 2. Newton had one touchdown pass and three picks along with 53 rushing yards and a score. He’s no joke.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Jason Campbell, QB, Oakland Raiders

Campbell threw for 323 yards and two touchdowns in a barn burner. He added a rushing touchdown. He’s worth a look in two-quarterback leagues, but not in standard leagues.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Andy Dalton, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

Dalton threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Keep in mind it was against Denver. I’m not compelled to add him just yet.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Mike Kafka, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

If Michael Vick and Vince Young are unable to go next week, Kafka would be a nice plug-and-play.

Ruling: Wait and see.

Thomas Jones, RB, Kansas City Chiefs

Jones only had 40 yards on 12 carries (3.3 YPC), but with Jamaal Charles’ injury he should be added in all format. Dexter McCluster should be added in PPR leagues.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Isaac Redman, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Redman ran for 49 yards on 10 carries with a 20-yard score. He also caught one pass for six yards. He solidified himself as Mendenhall’s handcuff, but won’t likely get many touches week-to-week.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Darren Sproles, RB, New Orleans Saints

Sproles had just 17 yards rushing (seven in the opener), but added eight catches for 43 yards and a score (7-75 in opener).  He’s a must add in PPR leagues and is a decent bench option in standard leagues.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Keiland Williams, RB, Detroit Lions

Williams had 25 yards on nine carries with a touchdown late. He did his work after the game was in hand.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Daniel Thomas, RB, Miami Dolphins

Thomas had an underwhelming preseason, but exploded for 107 yards on 18 carries (5.9 YPC). He also had a 10-yard catch. Given the fact that Reggie Bush is not a between-the-tackles runner, Thomas should have a role.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Willis McGahee, RB, Denver Broncos

He should have already been owned in  your league, but if he’s not, don’t hesitate to add him. McGahee’s 101 yards and a score are more than enough proof to show he’s still got tread on his tires.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Titus Young, WR, Detroit Lions

Young caught five passes for 89 yards. Despite the nice performance I’d want to see more before adding him.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Nate Washington, WR, Tennessee Titans

Washington caught seven passes for 99 yards giving him 13 catches for 166 yards in two games.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Brandon LaFell, WR, Carolina Panthers

LaFell caught four passes for 49 yards and a score. He had four catches for 70 yards in the opener so clearly he’s on Newton’s radar.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

David Nelson, WR, Buffalo Bills

Nelson caught 10 passes for 83 yards and the game-winning score. Last week he caught four passes for 66 yards. Hard not to endorse that production.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Jerome Simpson and A.J. Green, WRs, Cincinnati Bengals

Simpson caught four passes for 136 yards. Green added 10 grabs for 124 yards and a score (second of the year). Both has fantasy value, but Green is the one I’d target first.

Ruling: Get ‘em both (Green first).

Eric Decker, WR, Denver Broncos

Decker caught five passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. With all the Broncos’ injuries at WR they have to throw to somebody. Decker is capable, but do note that he has a history of getting injured.

Ruling: Get ‘em.

Denarius Moore, WR, Oakland Raiders

Moore took advantage of the Raiders’ wide receiver injuries. It’s hard to say what will happen when they return.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Jesse Holley, WR, Dallas Cowboys

Holley caught three passes for 96 yards. Dez Bryant should return next week so Holley’s run is over.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Jeff King, TE, Arizona Cardinals

King caught a pair of passes (two targets) for 36 yards and a score. He has scored in both games, though I’m not ready to suggest him for fantasy teams.

Ruling: Don’t Sweat ‘em.
