Swisher Shouldn't Be End Of Tex Pursuit

Joe MarinuNov 24, 2008

About 11 days ago, Brian Cashman sent Wilson Betemit, Jhonny Nunez, and Jeff Marquez to Chicago for Nick Swisher, and Kanekoa Texeira.

Good trade for the Yankees, right? Well, Kanekoa shouldn't be the last Teixera the Yankees acquire this off-season.

The acquisition of Nick Swisher shouldn't stop Mark Teixera from recieving phone calls from Brian Cashman. However, this does add leverage to the Yankees pursuit.

I know, Cashman has said he is the Yankees' starting first baseman. That doesn't mean you're not chasing Teixera, right? Think about it. If you do acquire Teixera, Swisher may still move to any spot in the outfield, and if Teixera needs a day off, he obviously can play first base. I don't see why getting Swisher should stop a news conference featuring Tex in Pinstripes.

Swisher does help, however, in the way that the Yankees technically now don't "need" Teixera and may save money because they now have leverage. This may all depend on CC Sabathia. Again, I'm getting you to think here. If the Yankees fail to sign CC, they would need to get Teixera desperately, and this is even with Swisher.

I bet the whole Yankees off-season will all depend on if CC signs with them. If CC's gone, you overpay for Burnett, Lowe, Perez, etc. If CC's gone, you may have more money to spend on position players like Teixera, Hudson, etc.

It's obvious that the whole off-season is based on a decision that will be made after Thanksgiving weekend or maybe later. This all depends on how much money the Giants, Dodgers, and Angels will be willing to spend.

Again, Swisher may have opened doors to other free agents and moves by the front office, but in no way should it be interfering with Mark "Mr. Leather" Teixera.

These guys only come up once in a Blue Moon... Why waste the chance?
