Michael Vick: 5 Reasons Why Falcons Don't Regret Ditching Vick

Kyle VassaloSep 18, 2011

Michael Vick is one of the most dangerous players in the NFL right now, but you can't blame the Atlanta Falcons for kicking Michael Vick to the curb.

Losing Vick was a huge blow to the franchise and set the team backwards before they found Matt Ryan, but even in hindsight getting Vick out of Atlanta was the only move the Falcons could have made.

Despite Vick coming out of incarceration and coming back stronger than ever, the Falcons and Vick needed to move on. Here are five reasons you can't blame the Falcons for ditching Vick.

Vick's Future Was Uncertain

1 of 5

There was no telling what was going to happen to Vick immediately following the dog fighting charges. Would he ever play another snap in the NFL again? How long would he be in prison for?

The Falcons couldn't run the risk of waiting out his time in prison. They didn't know what the future held for their franchise quarterback and waiting around for him to come around would have been too great of a risk to take.

The Falcons Ditched a PR Nightmare

2 of 5

The Eagles took a ton of heat for bringing in Vick in a third string role. Imagine what would have happened if the Falcons would have brought him back as a starter immediately.

Vick was able to hang around in the background in Philadelphia and let the media circus die down a bit before he became the face of the franchise.

Arthur Blank dodged a huge publicity nightmare by electing to move on from Vick.

The Falcons Are Happy with Matt Ryan

3 of 5

Matt Ryan stepped in immediately and made the Falcons a playoff contender. They suffered through a bad season without a legitimate quarterback under center, but the rebuilding process didn't take long.

Ryan brought the team back to the competitive team they were with Vick under center and gave the Falcons a chance to move forward. They have a legitimate franchise quarterback and losing Vick didn't leave the position in shambles.

The Move Was Better for Vick

4 of 5

Vick needed a wake-up call and the Falcons letting Vick go was the best thing that ever happened to him. Going to prison and having to work his way back into the league was perfect for Vick.

Had he not been held accountable for his actions by the penal system as well as the Falcons, it's hard to imagine he would have made this sort of turnaround off the field.

Waiting patiently behind Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb was the best case scenario for Vick.

Vick and the Falcons Didn't Hold Each Other Back

5 of 5

Neither the Falcons nor Vick could have been at their best if Vick would have stayed in Atlanta. The team couldn't put him forth as the face of their franchise after all that had happened and it was clear that he had worn out his welcome in Atlanta.

Both sides are appreciative of one another, but happy with where they are at the current moment. The separation was needed for both Vick and the Falcons to move onward and forward. Had Vick stayed in Atlanta, the Falcons wouldn't be the team they are today and who knows how Vick's comeback would have played out?
