Jamaal Charles Injury: Are Chiefs Doomed If Star RB Misses Season?
Jamaal Charles was carted off the field earlier, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Kansas City Chiefs season is all but over if Charles misses significant time. Charles is an emerging star, with great quickness and the ability to score from anywhere on the field. He is an irreplaceable part of the Kansas City Chiefs offense.
Last season, Kansas City earned a playoff berth based on their ability to run the football. They used the one-two punch of Jamal Charles and Thomas Jones to keep defenses off guard. Jones was the guy asked to pick up the tough yards; Charles provided the explosiveness. Without Charles, the Chiefs will be missing that explosive element.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Some will argue that Dexter McCluster will be able to fill the void if necessary. However, McCluster is an unproven player, surrounded by question marks. Replacing Jamal Charles isn't as easy as plugging in another quick running back. There are plenty of running backs that possess excellent speed. However, being an effective running back is about instincts and leverage.
Another concern is the impact on Matt Cassel that an injury to Charles will produce. Last season, Cassel did a good job protecting the football and making some necessary plays. However, he has yet to show the ability to carry a football team. Cassel will receive increased pressure as the success of this team would fall on his shoulders.
Cassel may also find more defenders in coverage, as Charles' running ability drew defenders into the box. Protecting the football will not be enough; Cassel will need to make plays. He will need to attack the defense and lead the offense.
I don't feel that Cassel is capable of making enough plays to keep the Chiefs competitive. If Charles misses significant time, the Chiefs will struggle to win football games.
