WWE Night of Champions 2011: Why John Cena Will Rip Alberto Del Rio Tonight
Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship is the match everyone thought they would be seeing at SummerSlam 2011. Instead, it has come a month later and will be the main event at Night of Champions 2011.
I am not the biggest John Cena fan as many of you well know, but I hope and predict that he will win the WWE Championship tonight.
Alberto Del Rio has been the WWE Champion for around a month now, but what have we seen him do? Barring one title defence against Rey Mysterio the night following SummerSlam, Alberto Del Rio has been made out to be a weak Champion by WWE creative, by having him run away from John Cena every two minutes.

I don’t believe the crowd is behind Del Rio enough yet to take him seriously as the top guy in the business. There is no doubt that the man has a lot of skill and certainly deserves to be at the top, but despite being the 2011 Royal Rumble winner, Del Rio has not been able to get over with the crowd. He just comes over as annoying—even more so now he has the WWE Championship.
John Cena has to win tonight so Alberto Del Rio can become involved in a decent feud. Since he joined the WWE, he has only been involved in one major feud, with the World Heavyweight Champion Edge. After Edge left the business and the torch was passed (in a way) to Christian, Alberto Del Rio vanished as Randy Orton became top dog on SmackDown.
There is no substance to this current storyline with John Cena. John Cena was initially angry with Alberto Del Rio for cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase on a downed CM Punk after a stellar match at SummerSlam.
This swiftly developed into anger because Del Rio won’t face him like a man on Raw. It just makes Cena look like an irrational man because he is getting angry over a WWE Championship that wasn’t even his after SummerSlam.
That is what the Money in the Bank briefcase is for John Cena—a match anytime, anywhere. Someone probably should have explained that to you by now.
This is one reason why John Cena needs to win tonight. Winning the WWE Championship back for the umpteenth time can allow Alberto Del Rio to have an excuse to be chasing after the title. There are multiple storylines that can be developed out of this dreadful one.
Del Rio could even make it his mission to stop Cena making it to WrestleMania with the belt. Something along those lines would give the story some substance and allow the feud to carry on over a few months.
The second reason John Cena needs to win the title back tonight is because of how weak Del Rio looks as a champion. By not facing John Cena, by not defending his championship (barring the match with Rey Mysterio) and going around the locker room begging people to take out Cena, he is turning into a weak champion.
There is no way Alberto Del Rio will be allowed to win cleanly over Cena if CM Punk wasn’t and therefore, he will have to lose or he will be the weakest looking champion since The Miz.
The difference was, I liked Miz as WWE Champion. He had a gimmick, something to latch onto—“the most must-see WWE Champion in history.” Del Rio just has his “destiny,” and quite frankly, his destiny is boring.
Winning with an underhanded tactic will do absolutely nothing to his character and turn the WWE Championship into more of a joke than some people already consider it to be.
The third and final reason John Cena should win the title back tonight is because CM Punk is next in line for a shot at the WWE Championship. Cena won the match on Raw to challenge Alberto Del Rio first, which means Punk has been biding his time by winding Triple H up. However, once that is over, he will face whoever is Champion after tonight.
I don’t know how well received Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk would be but I know I wouldn’t be that interested in it. We all know that John Cena vs. CM Punk will draw, and help WWE keep up its pretty much flawless PPV record since May.
Let us not forget that the next PPV is Hell in a Cell 2011, and I also can’t see Del Rio competing in that kind of match whereas CM Punk and John Cena have some bad blood.
Del Rio should not be WWE Champion at this moment in time anyway in my opinion and he could do with a little more development. Give him a secondary title to give him a chance to win over the crowd. WWE Champion just isn’t working for him.
John Cena is pretty much guaranteed to rip Alberto Del Rio tonight in their match. The man is even more unstoppable when he is angry and will certainly go cleanly over the current WWE Champion. It’s just a matter of time before Cena becomes a ten-time WWE Champion.
