WWE Night of Champions 2011 Results: Live Match-by-Match Breakdown and Analysis
Join us tonight for WWE Night of Champions 2011, live on pay-per-view at 8/7 CT, as the Voice of the Voiceless, CM Punk faces the COO Triple H in a no disqualification match and if HHH loses, he is to step down as COO of the WWE. It's a night where every championship is on the line!
WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton will defend his title against the World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry. Cody Rhodes will take on his former protege Ted DiBiase for the Intercontinental Championship.
Also on the card, Air Boom will defend their Tag-Team belts against the Awesome Truth. Kelly Kelly will face Beth Phoenix for the Divas Championship and Dolph Ziggler will be in a fatal-four way match for his United States Championship against John Morrison, Alex Riley and Jack Swagger.

Air Boom vs. Awesome Truth for the Unified Tag-Team Championship
1 of 7Match Breakdown: The Miz and Kofi Kingston will start off this contest. Miz began with control on the corner, but Kofi reversed with a roll-up and got the two-count. Kofi tagged in his partner and he hit the flying arm drop.
Truth tagged in and Bourne went for the clothesline in the corner and Truth avoided it, while Miz took a dirty shot while the ref wasn't looking. Miz is now in control of Bourne, but Evan reversed and went for a dropkick. Miz countered and went for the pin; two-count by the ref.
Truth and Miz currently hold the momentum with great teamwork, beating up on Bourne. Evan hit a suplex on Truth, which hurt both superstars. Truth got the tag, while keeping Evan grounded. Bourne, while fighting back, gets countered into a SCF. Bourne reversed it and tagged in Kofi.
Kingston hits builds momentum with his signature move-set leading to a Boom-Drop. Truth went for the ambush, but Kofi got to him first. Kofi hit his finisher, but Miz kicked out. Miz hits his DDT, off of Truth interference and only got a two-count.
Kofi swiftly gets a tag to Evan and he goes to work on the Miz. Truth comes out to stall, but Evan hit a flying kick. Bourne goes on the top rope, but Air Bourne failed. Miz hits a DDT, but Kofi broke up the tag.
Miz tags in Truth, but the ref didn't see it. While the ref fights with Truth, Miz hits the Skull-Crushing finale. The ref was too slow to turn around and Bourne kicked out at two (six-count).
The Miz knocks the ref out and he cost Awesome Truth the match. Air Boom has retained their titles.
After the match, Truth and Miz each got a shot in on the ref.
Rating: This match was decently worked. Although, the ending was awful. This feud will continue, so for storyline purposes, I'll give this match a 5/10.
Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase for the Intercontinental Championship
2 of 7Match Breakdown: Ted starts off with a newfound aggression, taking control of the match and a quick pin. Rhodes backs away and Ted hits a clothesline. Cody goes for a shoulder block, but Ted reverses with a dropkick. DiBiase is still controlling this match.
While Ted was calculating, Rhodes jumps off the ropes and gets connects with a swift kick to the face. Cody has taken control of this match, he hits a front suplex and starts slapping him around. Rhodes decides to show off his grappling skills, applying an arm submission.
Cody is still taking control of this match, applying many submissions. Ted reversed the abdominal stretch and hits a running clothesline. Ted hits the atomic drop added by a running knee strike.
Ted hits a spinebuster off the ropes and goes for a pin, but the ref counts to two. Cody went for his pattented kick to the face, but Ted reversed again with another dropkick.
DiBiase takes Cody to the top rope, but Rhodes uses his mask to stall Ted. Alas, He throws him off the rope and Ted rips the mask off of Cody. He went to hit Ted with the mask, but Cody reversed and got the roll-up for the victory. Cody Rhodes has retained his title.
Rating: This match was good. The in-ring work impressed me by both men and the storyline will continue. I give this match a 7/10.
Fatal-Four Way for the United States Championship
3 of 7Match Breakdown: Riley goes after Ziggler and Morrison control Swagger in the opposite corner. Riley gains control after a big clothesline. He throws outside, while Morrison gets tossed as well.
Swagger and Riley are left in the ring, while Jack misses the clothesline. Riley counters and is the lone wolf in the ring.
Riley dives outside and Ziggler avoids the crash. Meanwhile, Morrison is controlling Swagger with a few kicks. John went for a diving clothesline, but Swagger hip-tosses him out of the ring.
That leaves the two men who want Vickie more than most, Swagger knocks Ziggler out of the ring. Riley hits the TKO and Vickie places Jack's leg on the bottom rope to break the count.
Riley's back was turned and Ziggler dropkicked him out. Morrison hits the Rhodes special kick to the face and now John goes for a dropkick, but Ziggler reverses him for a near-fall.
Morrison is still controlling the match. He drags Ziggler into the corner and goes for a superplex. Dolph battles out and puts John into the tree of woe. Riley leaps up on the top rope and Morrison hits a superplex in the tree of woe.
Swagger takes advantage and hip tosses Ziggler down and to the floor. Riley and Swagger are in the middle of the ring, very battered and bruised.
Morrison is again takes control with a counter-DDT. John hits his finisher to Riley, but Riley kicks out at two. John goes up for his Starship Pain, but Riley reverses with knees to the kidney.
Ziggler applys the sleeper on Morrison and Swagger applies his ankle lock on Riley. Morrison got out of the ring and Riley reverses it. Riley hits his Edgeucation on Swagger, but Jack kicks out.
Swagger gets the Ankle lock on Riley, John comes in for the save and Swagger reverses it for the Gutwrench Powerbomb. Ziggler kicks Swagger and stole the pin for the victory.
Dolph Ziggler retains his United States Championship.
Rating: All four men did a great job. The in-ring work was awesome and I will give this match an 8.5/10.
Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship
4 of 7Match Breakdown: A staredown starts the match. Henry throws Orton into the corner and goes for a shoulder block, but Randy counters and throws some decent strikes to the knees. A kick to the head knocks the big man down.
Orton starts his stomping game and ends with the knees to the temple. Henry runs towards him, but Randy reverses and throws Henry to ringside.
Orton went for the RKO, but Henry reversed and kicked him in the skull. Mark goes to control now and launches Orton into each corner. Mark goes for the WSS, but Randy reverses and applies the sleeper hold.
Mark reverses it and sends Orton into the corner to force the break. Randy channels his inner Sheamus with shots to the chest. Henry counters with a shot to the head, sending Orton over the to rope and smacking the mat.
Henry goes to work outside, driving Orton's back into ringside multiple times. Back in the ring, Henry still dominates and steps on Orton's back on the ropes.
Mark hits a body slam and hits the big splash. He goes for the cover and Orton powers out at two. Randy tries to counter, but Henry comes back with a headbutt. Another cover for Henry, but Randy powers out yet again.
Henry continues to dominate Orton in the middle of the ring. Out of nowhere, Orton kicks and punches Henry, hoping to knock him down. During that, Henry throws a headbutt and goes for the big splash.
Orton avoids it and starts to throw punches in the corner. After mutliple clotheslines, Orton hits his pattented dropkick. Henry then heads towards the ropes and tries to connect with his DDT. Mark reversed it and throws another headbutt.
Henry then nails another Worlds Strongest Slam, but Orton powers out at two. Henry drags Orton to hit his Vader bomb, but Orton reverses it and hits a DDT in the middle of the ring.
Mark goes to the ropes, but Orton attempts his DDT and connects. Henry kicked out at two off of the pin.
Henry gets back to his feet and starts to work on the injured knee of Orton. Randy goes for an RKO, but Henry counters and hits the World Strongest Slam for the three-count!
MARK HENRY IS THE NEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!
Rating: Plain and simple. Randy Orton lost. This match receives a 9/10.
Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoneix for the Divas Championship
5 of 7Match Breakdown: Beth starts off the match in control. Kelly reverses a powerbomb with a roll-up and gets the two-count. Kelly goes to the top rope and Beth reverses the frog splash and she hits the gutbuster.
Beth keeps receiving loud cheers from the crowd. Phoenix takes Kelly to the corner and goes to work and then she drags Kelly to the middle for a pin, but she powered out. Now they go back and forth, until Beth reverses. Then Kelly reverses her reversal with a bulldog.
Beth takes care of Eve at ringside, for beating up on Natalya. She rolls back in the ring and Kelly rolls up Beth again, but she powers out. Kelly rolls her up again and then Beth powered out.
Phoenix runs to the corner, Kelly reversed it and went for her finisher. Beth countered and hit a nice clothesline.
Beth is with Kelly on the top rope and she is attempting a superplex. She connects, but both divas are down. Phoenix crawls for the pin, but Kelly kicks out at two.
Beth attempts her finisher, but Kelly rolls through and pins Beth. Kelly Kelly as retained the Divas Championship.
Rating: This match was average. There were nice spots from both superstars. I'll give this match a 6/10
Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship
6 of 7Match Breakdown: Cena runs towards Del Rio to start the show and applies a headlock on the champion. Cena continues momentum with a shoulder block and Del Rio keeps stalling with Ricardo on the side.
Del Rio goes to work, but Cena reverses with a shoulder block off the ropes. He hits the bulldog and then goes for a clothesline, but Ricardo interferes. The ref immediately orders him to leave ringside.
Cena throws rights and lefts, then goes for a clothesline in the corner. Del Rio avoids it and hits a swift kick to Cena's temple and then he crashes to the floor.
Del Rio begins to grapple, putting John into a submission hold. Cena channels his superman gimmick and powers out of the hold. He hits the gutwrench slam and quickly cover ADR, but he kicks out at two.
Corner to corner he throws Del Rio and on the rebound, he suplexes Alberto. Another cover, but Del Rio kicks out.
He softens up Cena's arm, hoping to set up the cross-arm breaker. Del Rio then throws a few more kicks to Cena, keeping him down. Del Rio continues to dominate the match and keep up the pressure. Kicks to the side continue and now he applies another choke-hold.
Cena begins to power out and successfully does so. Cena picks up Del Rio and hits the belly-to-belly suplex. Both men are down in the ring and the ref is counting to ten.
Cena and Alberto both make it up and Del Rio connects with a kick to the hamstring. Cena is groggy on the ropes and Del Rio goes for another shot. Del Rio reverses a clothesline and goes for a pin, but Cena kicks out.
John suplexes Del Rio from the ropes and now both men are down again. Alberto makes it up first and goes for a clothesline. Cena counters with his signiature moves of doom.
Five Knuckle Shuffle connects. John goes for the AA and Del Rio hits the backbreaker. Cena kicks out at two. He loses temper and kicks Cena hard in the back.
He attempts the Cross-Arm and Cena reverses it and hits a dropkick to ADR. He goes for a pin, but Del Rio kicks out at two. Alberto hits a kick to the head to Cena as he was on the top rope, but John kicks out at two.
ADR goes for the same kick and Cena attempts the STF. Del Rio goes for the pin off the reversal and John powers out at two. Del Rio takes Cena to the corner and goes to work on his back and head with several kicks.
He dives shoulder first and and Cena avoids the tackle in the corner. John is setting up for his leg drop and connects. Pin by Cena and Del Rio powers out.
German suplex by ADR and Cena gets the arm up at two. Alberto heads to the top rope and connects with a back-slam. Cena powers out of the pin at two.
Del Rio applies the Cross-Arm Breaker and Cena struggles to power out. He picks up Del Rio and powerslams him. Cena goes for the AA and connects it. Ricardo comes back out and applies interference.
Cena runs back and applies the STF on Alberto. Del Rio finally taps out and John Cena is the new WWE champion.
Rating: It was a great match. Nothing else to comment on. I'll give that an 9/10.
CM Punk vs. Triple H No Disqualification
7 of 7Match Breakdown: Punk interrupts HHH's intro and starts to beat him up ringside. He throws HHH over the barracade, but HHH gains back momentum and tosses him into the barracade on the other side.
HHH goes to work behind the announcer desk. He positions Punk for a pedigree on the table and Punk reverses it for a GTS. Hunter reverses that and Punk is waiting in the ring for him. Both men go back and forth in the ring and Punk takes Hunter to the corner and tosses punches.
Hunter attempts another pedigree, but Punk had none of it. They end up at ringside and HHH smashes Punk into the barracade and the ringpost. He continues to throw Punk's knee into the post repeatedly.
CM Punk was about to take control after hitting his knee to the face combo, but HHH tosses him into the crowd. HHH then hits the flying axe-handle in the crowd and gains momentum. Hunter is taking it to Punk with constant shots to the head.
Still throughout the crowd, Punk hits HHH with a trashcan. He then throws HHH threw a steel barracade. They make their way to the front. Punk is now in control and HHH reverses a strike and tosses Punk into the screen.
HHH went for another pedigree, but CM Punk launched him in the air and on to the concrete. Punk jumps on top of the small screen and connects an axe handle. Punk is throwing sandbags on HHH as he tries and walks away.
Punk still takes advanted by launching HHH into the other small screen. Into the ring they go and Punk searches for a weapon of choice. He grabs a chair nails him with a chair.
HHH reversd a Punk clothesline and hits a spinebuster. He goes for the pin, but Punk kicked out at two. He continues to drive Punk's head into a steel chair in the corner.
HHH goes to work on Punk's knee with a chair shot square on the patella. He then reversed a shot and sends Hunter into the ring steps.
HHH grabbed the TV monitor and went to strike Punk, but he countered with a kick to the skull. Punk travels to the top rope, with HHH on the table and hits the Macho Man elbow drop, breaking the table.
Miz and R-Truth make their way to the ring and start beating up on Punk and HHH. Miz dragged Punk on top of HHH for the cover, but Hunter kicked out. They get into it with the ref and Awesome Truth went to beat up the ref, but he blocked Miz's punch. Truth got him from behind.
John Laurinaitis comes out. Meanwhile, HHH and Punk take out Truth and Miz. HHH hits a pedigree on Punk. There is no ref to count it. Ace and another ref come out to make sure the other one is okay.
Punk then hits the GTS on HHH. Ace sends in a ref and was going to count to three, but Truth breaks the count. Punk hits a GTS on Truth at ringside.
HHH hits a pedigree off a reversal springboard, but Punk kicked out at two. Kevin Nash comes through the crowd. He goes to work on both superstars. Punk then starts attacking Nash. Kevin reversed for a powerbomb and it connects.
Kevin continues on Triple H outside of the ring. Triple H hits Nash with a sledgehammer, while Nash was setting up the announce table. Triple H hit another pedigree and pins CM Punk with the three count.
Rating: This match was filled with surprisement and excitement. I'll give this match a 9/10, based purely on excitement.
