WWE Friday Night SmackDown Recap: 5 Best Moments of the Night

Kaleb KelchnerSep 17, 2011

The weekend kicked off in proper fashion last night, with an action-packed WWE Friday Night SmackDown!

Bleacher Report is here to break down the top five moments of the night, and there were plenty of moments to sort through!

This was the SmackDown go-home show for Night of Champions on Sunday night, and there was plenty of hype behind SmackDown's premier championship, the World Heavyweight Championship, currently held by Randy Orton.

From the surprise showdown between two Sin Caras, to Mark Henry brawling against Randy Orton, and the entire locker room, let's check out the top five moments of the night.

Cody Rhodes Catches a Million Dollar Beatdown

1 of 5

SmackDown's "Edge Appreciation Night" got off to a good start with Edge coming out and addressing the WWE Universe—that is, until Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes came out to rain on the parade.

After some back and forth on the microphone, Edge left, while Rhodes grew angry and pointed out individual fans who needed to wear one of the paper bags Rhodes so generously hands out via his associates.

As Rhodes continued along the ringside area pointing out fans, a man wearing a bag in the crowd blasted him, and removed the bag to reveal that it was Rhodes former friend, Ted DiBiase.

DiBiase beat Rhodes down, and eventually looked to place a bag on his head, only to have Rhodes escape clutching his Intercontinental Title.

Rhodes will be defending his title against DiBiase at Night of Champions.

Build Up to a Proper Tag Team Title Match...say What?

2 of 5

This past Monday on Raw, The Miz faced Kofi Kingston with their respective tag team partners in their corners. Last night on SmackDown, R-Truth took on Evan Bourne, with their respective partners going at it in the announcer booth.

It feels like it's been ages since a proper tag team title defense, with solid build up, and a match that looks promising.

Although the match between R-Truth and Evan Bourne was short, R-Truth and The Miz rapping the new "Whats Up" remix, "You Suck" was gold.

This segment filled a slot that would normally be filler, but instead gave us an entertaining, and significant moment that built hype for the Air Boom vs. Awesome Truth Tag Team Championship match at Night of Champions.

I'm glad to see the SmackDown writers have the right idea.

Sheamus and Justin Gabriel Defeat Wade Barrett and Christian

3 of 5

Sheamus has been getting a significant push as a face, and things were no different last night on SmackDown.

Sheamus teamed with the lesser known Justin Gabriel against Wade Barrett and Christian in a bout that saw Gabriel get a significant amount of in ring time.

Sheamus eventually stepped into the fray and cleaned house, but allowed Gabriel to hit his 450 splash, and secure the victory for their team.

There's a feud brewing between Sheamus and Christian, and I like it!

"The Cutting Edge" Gets Physical

4 of 5

Edge hosted "The Cutting Edge" to close out the show, bringing in Randy Orton and Mark Henry to question them just days prior to their bout at Night of Champions.

Both Orton and Edge almost seemed heel-ish in their comments to Mark Henry, noting that in his entire time with the company, he's never secured one of the big championships. Edge went as far as to say that without a major title run, Henry's career is disappointing.

Ouch.

As expected, things escalated, and a brawl broke out. Teddy Long sent out the locker room to break up the brawl, but it was Henry who was the last man standing.

Henry is one of the best monster heels in a long time, and I'd hate to see the WWE simply use him to put Orton over even further. With the quality of his recent work, and time in the company, I feel Henry deserves the title.

Sin Cara vs. Daniel Bryan Leads into the Real Sin Cara's Return

5 of 5

After a quality rematch between Sin Cara and Daniel Bryan saw the new, aggressive Sin Cara disqualified for repeatedly kicking Bryan in the head as he was hung on the turnbuckles, the WWE Universe was shocked by a sudden return.

Well, kind of.

The original Sin Cara appeared, and came to the ring. The two stared down, with the original motioning with his hands that he was the real Sin Cara.

The crowd was confused at first, but quickly caught on, and reacted accordingly when the Sin Cara's motioned to them.

Top this off with classic Booker T commentary throughout, and this is easily the best moment of the night.
