Fantasy Football Week 2: 5 Fantasy Stars You Have to Avoid at All Costs

Donald WoodSep 17, 2011

With Week 2 of fantasy football already on our doorsteps, the tough decisions on who to sit and start are already eating at our fantasy souls.

Well, I am here to talk you have the fantasy ledge and lead you to an upset victory despite your mediocre lineup. If your lineup is already great, these are tips to ensure you don’t screw it up by starting the wrong players.

If you are torn about any of the players on this list, take my advice and sit them on your bench so their lack of production doesn’t cost you in your fantasy league.

Steve Smith and Cam Newton—I know how amazing the first game of Cam Newton’s NFL career was, and I know the biggest benefactor of that was speedy wide receiver Steve Smith.

Before you break the bank getting these two player in your lineup, just remember that the Carolina Panthers were playing the porous secondary of the Arizona Cardinals last week, and this week he will be facing the defensive juggernaut that is the Green Bay Packers.

Neither player should be in your starting lineup if you can help it.

Beanie Wells—The Arizona Cardinals looked to Beanie Wells as the unquestioned No. 1 running back after rookie Ryan Williams was blew his knee out in the preseason, and Wells rewarded the team with a solid game in Week 1.

While the showing was excellent, Wells will be facing a tough Washington Redskins run defense that will expose him as a mediocre back. Add the fact that Rex Grossman will throw all over the Cardinals secondary and Wells won’t have many chances to run while his team is down all game.

Frank GoreAfter coming up as small as he could against one of the worst teams in the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers won’t have it much easier this week when they try running Frank Gore in the tough Dallas Cowboys run defense.

Gore rushed 22 times in Week 1 for only 59 yards, and the Cowboys will be bringing a much better defense to town that Gore had to face against Seattle.

Chad Ochocinco—With all of the talk about how Chad Ochocinco was going to take the spot vacated by the departure of Randy Moss last season, the expectations for the receiver in New England was through the roof.

Whatever caused the issues in Week 1 is up for debate, but the fact that he could only muster one catch in a game that saw his quarterback throw for over 500 yards shows that he is a must-sit until he proves otherwise.

Ryan Fitzpatrick—With four touchdowns against a tough defense like the Kansas City Chiefs, why in the world would Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick be a must-sit?

That’s because last week was an anomaly that won’t happen against a much tougher Raiders secondary, even with the loss of Nnamdi Asomugha. Fitzpatrick will face a team traveling across the country and should have the edge, but he just can’t match the kind of number he put up last week.
