Alex Rodriguez: Will Breakup With WAG Diaz Impact A-Rod's Playoff Fortunes?

Andrew KulhaSep 15, 2011

It looks like New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and Hollywood star Cameron Diaz have finally broken up for good, and I bet the Yankee’s couldn’t be happier about that.

The celebrity couple has gone back and forth between breaking up and getting back together, so it’s understandable if you’re not exactly 100 percent on board with the news. According to the New York Post, this does appear to be for good though:

"

Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz have split again -- and sources say this time it looks like it’s over for good.

Sources told Page Six that the uber-toned couple broke up after the Yankee slugger looked for ways to wiggle out of the romance.

“For weeks he’s been trying to get out of the relationship,” said one source, adding that Rodriguez has been telling people it’s over -- “But she has been in denial about it.”

There is nothing worse than having a player distracted during a playoff run, and Rodriguez isn’t exactly known for being the most focused.

Besides one great postseason, Rodriguez hasn’t been known for doing much at all in the playoffs, so I think this will be a good thing.

In fact, the Post’s report states that Rodriguez is focusing on his career:

"

“They have broken up before and got back together, and who knows if it may happen again,” another source told Page Six. “But I get the sense that it won’t. He was losing interest and is ready to move on.”

The source also said both are focused on their careers right now, particularly Rodriguez: “They remain friends and it is amicable. They are career-minded professionals, and they continue to focus on their own priorities. He has had a number of injuries and he wants to stay focused on winning a world championship.”

"

Yankee fans, this would be the part of the story where you start celebrating.

Actually, this may be worth planning a pre-parade for! It’s too early for a world championship parade just yet, but this definitely calls for an A-Rod broke up with Diaz parade.

As sad as breakups can be, this is the best thing for Rodriguez and the Yankees.

He hasn’t exactly had the best year on and off the diamond, so at this point the less distractions he has to fight the better.

This couldn’t have happened at a better time either!

The Yankees have a lead over Boston in the AL East, but it’s not safe until they clinch. They are going to need A-Rod at the top of his game just to finish this season, but then he’s going to have to step it up even more in the playoffs.

Frankly, this may be one of the toughest years to come out of the AL, so Rodriguez is going to have to focused and ready to go.

It’s going to be a tough postseason road, so it’s good that Rodriguez got this out of the way  while there was still time.

I think in the end he will find that it was the right move, and I expect a good, clear-minded postseason out of him.
