Tom Brady: Why Star QB's Comments Should Not Be Taken Seriously

Tim KeeneyJun 4, 2018

Once again, after Tom Brady's latest comments towards Patriots fans, a controversy has arisen for seemingly no reason at all.

In Brady's most recent interview, he urged Patriot fans to be, well, hydrated on Sunday afternoon.

"Yeah, start drinking early," Brady said. "Get nice and rowdy. It's a 4:15 game, a lot of time to get lubed up. Come out here, and cheer for the home team."

Of course, many people were upset by this and the Patriots later released a statement clarifying that Brady "meant 'stay hydrated, drink a lot of water. Be loud, drink responsibly.'"

My reaction? Well, my secondary reaction right after, "Did they really think they were going to fool anyone with that 'water' comment?"

Who cares?

I realize that people drinking excessive amounts of alcohol before a football game can be dangerous, and it's a problem that needs to be taken seriously and finally, that the press doesn't want an all-star condoning these actions.

But is there really anybody out there who doesn't realize Brady was saying it in a jokingly matter? He wasn't seriously telling people how much to drink. He just wants his fans to be rowdy and to provide a home-field advantage.

He wasn't telling you to down that fourth apple-tini even if it does put you over the edge.

Even if he was being serious and telling New Englanders to up their alcohol intake.

Even if there actually are people out there who think, "Oh Brady said to drink more, I'm going to drink more!"

Even if people can't think for themselves, I'm pretty sure those people are the ones who were going to be blacking out anyways.

Brady's not going to change anyone's natural habits with these comments.

All he's going to do is gain respect as a down-to-earth guy because he was being funny and making a joke.

I, for one, don't want a robot on the other side of interviews. I'd rather listen to nothing at all than listen to Brady tell Patriots fans "to please show up in large numbers for the game, but remember, don't drink excessively."

Again, I understand the importance of alcohol safety at sporting events, but I think anyone who is upset with Brady's comments must really underestimate society's ability to think for themselves.

Like the old adage sort of goes, if Brady told me to jump off a bridge, would I?

I certainly was about to jump until the Patriots released a statement clarifying that Brady didn't really mean it, that's for sure.
