Fantasy Football Rankings Week 2: 5 Defenses That Won't Repeat Week 1 Success

Jun 7, 2018

When it comes to fantasy football, I don't think it's a stretch to say that defense is the most schizophrenic spot on any given team's roster. Very rarely do you know what you're going to get from your defense on a week-to-week basis.

But hey, some defenses around the NFL looked just fine in Week 1 of the regular season. They dominated the competition, racked up the fantasy points and could do so again in Week 2.

Most of them won't, however. In particular, there are five defenses that I think have no shot whatsoever of repeating their Week 1 success in Week 2.

Observe...

5. Buffalo Bills

In one of the surprise upsets of the week, the Bills stomped the Kansas City Chiefs 41-7. In addition to allowing just seven points, the Bills had an interception and two fumble recoveries.

We could take this to mean the Bills defense is going to be much better this year. Or we could take it to mean the Chiefs had a really, really bad day.

My money is on the latter. And against the Oakland Raiders and their vaunted rushing attack, my gut feeling is that Buffalo's D is going to come back to earth a little bit.

4. Washington Redskins

The Redskins have the look of a team that could be formidable on defense, and they showed as much against the New York Giants. They allowed only 14 points, sacked Eli Manning four times and had an interception, a blocked kick and a touchdown. Formidable indeed.

But now comes the hard part. Kevin Kolb and the Arizona Cardinals are coming to town, and they bring an offense that is much more dangerous than that of the Giants. It's not going to be as easy to contain them, and we could see some holes in the Redskins D get exposed.

3. San Francisco 49ers

Depending on how your league scores defense, the 49ers defense was the highest-scoring unit in fantasy in Week 1. It allowed a respectable 17 points against the Seattle Seahawks, but then padded the effort with five sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and two return touchdowns from Ted Ginn, Jr.

But let's face it—the Seahawks are a rotten offensive team. The Dallas Cowboys are not, and they're coming to San Francisco this weekend.

The Cowboys are going to score points on the Niners, make no mistake about that. However, I do think the Niners will force a turnover or two. They are, after all, facing Tony Romo.

2. Philadelphia Eagles

As soon as Steven Jackson had to leave the game, the Eagles defense was pretty much home free against the St. Louis Rams. By the end of the game, it had allowed just 13 points while piling up five sacks, a fumble recovery and a touchdown.

But the Atlanta Falcons are going to present a stiff challenge. Michael Turner is exactly the kind of tough, physical back that is going to feast on Philly's front seven, and I think we can expect the Falcons offense as a whole to wake up in a big way.

1. Chicago Bears

Against the high-powered offense of the Atlanta Falcons, the Bears defense allowed just six points. It also had five sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a touchdown. Not a bad day at the office.

Against the New Orleans Saints, though, the Bears are not going to have such a fun time. Drew Brees and the Saints tore up the Green Bay Packers for 34 points and 477 yards, and they're going to be a threat to put up numbers like that every week no matter who they're playing.

Including the Bears.
