NFL Week One: 5 Quarterbacks Already on the Hot Seat

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

Sure, it has only been a week for the NFL, but some teams are already starting to figure things out.

As we saw Sunday, many quarterbacks in question a season ago are still in question this season.

I know it has only been a week, but no team wants to waste a season going in the wrong direction.

Many faithful fans will either be saying, "Just wait" while others will be saying, "What are they thinking?! Get him out of there!"

After week one, these five starting quarterbacks have already found themselves on the hot seat.

Tavaris Jackson

1 of 5

Thanks for making it official, Pete Carrol.

Tavaris Jackson still is garbage.

The Seattle Seahawks parted ways with seasoned veteran Matt Hassleback to insert Jackson into their starting quarterback slot.

The Seahawks do have Charlie Whitehurst waiting in the wings, and he could potentially get a shot soon considering they traded assets for his services last season.

Jackson ended up going 21 for 37 with 197 total passing yards and two touchdowns along with an interception.

Jackson will likely get a shot in week two, and he can only hope that former Viking Sidney Rice will be suiting up to make him look better.

Chances Tavaris starts Week Two: 99 percent

Donovan McNabb

2 of 5

Please, Donovan, just retire.

McNabb was an incredible player back in his days with the Philadelphia Eagles, but after a dismal season in Washington, McNabb should have just hung up the cleats.

This season, McNabb finds himself in Minnesota, and let us just say things are not going any better.

McNabb put up 39 passing yards Sunday on seven for 15 attempts. Pathetic. Yes, he had a touchdown pass, but he also had an interception.

The Vikings just gave Peterson big money, and he cannot move the ball alone. They need to get their moneys worth and get Peterson with a good enough quarterback.

This game was only close because of Peterson and Percy Harvin. The Vikings have rookie Christian Ponder sitting in the wings, and they should get him out there next season. If Ponder was playing Sunday, the Vikings likely would have won this game.

That's how bad McNabb was because I am able to say that without Ponders ever taking an official snap in the NFL.

Chances McNabb starts Week Two: 20 percent

Tony Romo

3 of 5

I don't know where this whole Tony Romo is supposed to be this quarterback god came from.

The man has yet to do anything but fail.

I like Romo, I think he is a charismatic guy, but he just doesn't get it done on the field.

From the juggled snap a few years back in the playoffs to last nights game ending interception, Romo just has never got it done in Dallas.

Romo threw for 342 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Yes, those are good numbers, but the interception was so stupid, as it could have easily been avoided. It was at a crucial time in the game and it just shows how unstable the quarterback is under pressure situations.

Luckily for Romo, he is all they got. Jon Kitna has shined at times, but Romo gives the Cowboys their best chance to win. Romo will likely be the starter for the rest of this season, but expect the Cowboys to start looking elsewhere after 2011 if things continue down the same path.

Chances Romo starts Week Two: 100 percent

Matt Cassel

4 of 5

I know that Matt Cassel is hurt, but after a 119 yard game on 22 of 36 attempts against a Buffalo Bills defense, Cassel's starting spot may come into question.

Matt Cassel has had his ups and downs, but on a year of big expectations for the Kansas City Chiefs, Cassel may not be their best option, especially if he is playing hurt.

Cassel only threw for one touchdown, paired with an interception. Having weapons like Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Jamal Charles, one would expect Cassel to light it up.

Ultimately he failed this Sunday. Luckily for him the defense didn't look any better.

Tyler Palko is the only other option for the Chiefs, but they could look into free agency or the trade market for another option. We will see what happens.

Chances that Cassel starts Week Two: 90 percent

Kerry Collins

5 of 5

Talk about from best to worst.

Kerry Collins proved Sunday why he should have just stayed retired.

If Peyton Manning is not coming back for a while, if ever, it is best that the Colts start to explore other realistic options.

Collins went 16 for 31 accumulating 197 yards with one touchdown. No interceptions, so that's a good thing, but he was no Peyton Manning. Rex Grossman looked better in a much weaker offense.

Collins tried, but for his personal health the Colts future, it is best they just call it off.

Collins will likely get a shot in week two, but the Colts need to start grooming someone else to take over. Curtis Painter is not an option, so perhaps the Colts just will wait it out.

They could make a move involving Peyton Manning if they feel they must really part with their franchise quarterback. These coming weeks are certainly going to be interesting in Indianapolis.

Chances Collins starts Week Two: 98 percent
