Tampa Bay Buccaneers Post Mortem: Did Anyone Play Well Against Detroit?

Tom EdringtonJun 5, 2018

If you want a long list, ask who played poorly against Detroit on Sunday in that opening effort that took us back to the gosh-awful preseason.

Want a short list?

Who actually played well?

This isn't real difficult so let's get to it.

Who played the best?

Easy—Michael Koenen. The big Buccaneer prize of free agency punted five times and averaged more than 52 yards a kick.

When it came to kickoffs, he is as advertised. Excellent.

He's the one Buccaneer who actually earned his paycheck for this week.

Who played well on offense?

Listen closely and you can hear a pin drop, can't you? Wouldn't you love to gather the Buccaneer starters together and ask THEM any of THEM to raise their hands if they think they played well?

The running backs were awful. Do we miss Cadillac Williams yet? While his team was getting smashed by the Eagles, Caddy ran 19 times for 91 yards and caught six passes for another 49 for the crappy Lambs.

After this Week 1 fiasco, letting Cadillac go is beginning to look like the biggest mistake of the offseason.

You also know you're in trouble offensively when Earnest Graham is your leading receiver with eight for 58 yards.

So there's your answer.

Who played well on offense?

No one, zip, nada, zilch.

Now for the defense.

You have to give a lot of credit to Brian Price. One the game's first play, he broke through the Detroit offensive line and dropped the ball carrier for the loss.

Price gave a great effort considering where he came from.

Adrian Clayborn? ZERO tackles.

Linebackers? Quincy Black made one of the bonehead plays of the game when he got a fumble, had both feet inbounds, then as he went out-of-bounds, flung the ball back to the field of play where a Detroit player snagged it.

Note to Quincy Black, this isn't basketball.

This was a very forgettable defensive effort.

Matthew Stafford and his receiving corps flat-out had their way with Tampa Bay. Hey, that rhymes.

Special teams?

Kudos to Sammie Stroughter for his kickoff return after the first Detroit field goal. He went 78 yards then watched as the offense squandered what should have been a touchdown situation and a field goal was the result.

Now the bad news on Sammie: Raheem Morris announced at his noon press conference Monday that Stroughter will have a "minor surgery" and will be out for at least two weeks.

Koenen, already took care of him.

Connor Barth, he'll be fine this year. The problem is, the way things look, he might end up being overused. Not good.

When you add it all up, not much went right, no one really made you think "wow."

The players aren't alone in this either.

Raheem Morris needs to shoulder a lot of blame along with his staff.

A lot of blame.
