Philadelphia Phillies Make a Trade

Kevin McGuireNov 21, 2008

In the wake of the news that the Phillies may be missing Chase Utley until as late as June and Pedro Feliz was to have back surgery, the Phillies traded one of their prospects, Greg Golson.

In exchange for Golson, who was traded to the Texas Rangers, the Phillies will receive a Texas system prospect in John Mayberry Jr. Golson was thought to be added to the roster for next season, especially if Pat Burrell is gone. Now it seems as though that Mayberry may be the young guy shooting for playing time in left field.
Mayberry and Golson had similar stats in minor leagues with the key exception of one category: strike outs and walks. Mayberry recorded a better K/BB ratio than Golson and also is tabbed as a five tool player.

Pop quiz! What are the five tools of a baseball player?

Mayberry may not be an immediate contributor to the team but shows the promise to be a nice addition in a short time. He also shows some signs of some power and would be a nice right handed bat to add to the mix.
Golson's time in Philadelphia was brief and he provided the Phills with a couple of key runs in the push for the playoffs. Congratulations. Take your World Series ring and enjoy some success with the Rangers.

This move does not solve the outfield problems lingering if Burrell leaves...yet.
