Why Novak Djokovic Is Destined to Beat Rafael Nadal in US Open Final
It would be fitting, would it not, if Novak Djokovic were to win the last Grand Slam of the year and cap what has truly been an astonishing year for the world No. 1.
Having lost only two matches all year, and beaten Rafael Nadal in a Grand Slam final only a couple of months ago, Djokovic is surely going to claim his fourth slam.
Any doubts that Djokovic would struggle against Nadal were quickly brushed aside yesterday. The Serbian's comeback against Roger Federer just proves why he is going to win on Monday.
Coming back from two sets down against anyone is hard, but when your opponent is Federer it is nothing short of a miracle. Djokovic has developed such an impressive mental attitude to the game that at two sets down he was able to virtually start again and beat Federer in straight sets.
Djokovic may win on Monday, but it will be far from one sided. Nadal's impressive semifinal performance against Andy Murray proves that he is well and truly in the hunt, and the Spaniard can take the Serb to four or five sets.
However, Djokovic has not lost to a left-hander, nor lost a match after winning the first set this year. Nadal will have to be at his very best to even smell the scent of an 11th Grand slam title.
How the tables have turned since this time last year. With a Nadal—Djokovic final looming it is now the Serb who is the favourite, and a repeat of the 2011 Wimbledon final looks to be on the cards.
