WWE: Santino Marella and How His Car Accident Can Change His Character

Matthew HemphillJun 7, 2018

By now, most fans know that Anthony Carelli, better known as Santino Marella, was in a car accident on September 1.

Marella was apparently going home, when he was hit by another vehicle and his car flipped over. The power to his car was still on after the accident, and he crawled out. He is now recovering from a separated left shoulder.

Honestly, Marella's luck couldn't be better.

Recently, the WWE has decided to inject real-life situations into their stories. It's a great idea that always works if done correctly and Marella could be the next angle for them.

Marella is a judoka with an MMA background who almost had a career as a fighter instead of a wrestler.  He is an exceptionally  talented athlete.  However up until now he hasn't been taken seriously.

The accident could change that.

Instead of bringing back the old Marella, the WWE should use this time to plan a character overhaul.

He will return, and when he does, it should be to the same music but he should have different ring gear and a different look.

When he comes out, he should say that he loves the fans, but that he realized he is mortal and wants to be a champion.  He should say he didn't push it before because he didn't want to upset the higher-ups or anyone else, but that the accident made him realize he didn't want to end up another "maybe" story.

This will needlessly garner him heat as Marella is loved as a clown and not as a wrestler. But if pushed correctly, it will only be temporary.

After his initial return, he should then be moved to Smackdown which revolves more around wrestling, so he can start putting on good matches.  Then, it's just a matter of him winning matches.

I'm not saying drop the Italian act, but tone it down, lose the uni-brow, the ridiculous ring gear, and make the cobra the "king cobra" and have it be a submission finisher.

As a judoka, he should have no trouble coming up with one.

Marella is over with the crowd.  He has the fundamentals.  Now, he can have the story.

He just needs to speak up and realize that that car accident was his second chance, and he needs to take it.

It's his shot.  He needs to take it.  He won't be this lucky again.
