UFC 137: Georges St-Pierre vs. Carlos Condit Head-to-Toe Breakdown

Tim McTiernanSep 7, 2011

As I'm sure you know by now, Nick Diaz has been pulled out of his title fight against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137. He' has been replaced by Carlos Condit, who was scheduled to fight BJ Penn on the same card.

If you didn't know about what happened, feel free to check it out here.

Now that GSP will face off against Condit, check out the head-to-toe breakdown for this fight, which is sure to be a war.

Striking

1 of 10

As far as standard technical striking, GSP has a clear edge over Condit.

GSP was able to jab his way to victory against Josh Koscheck, and GSP works with some of the best boxing trainers in the world.

This one is a no-brainer.

Edge: GSP

Power

2 of 10

Condit does have the edge in power.

Condit has got 27 wins under his belt, with 13 of them coming by way of TKO.

That's not bad.

Condit has TKOd such fighters as Dong Hyun Kim (first career loss), Dan Hardy (only career KO loss), Rory MacDonald (first career loss) and Brad Gumm (only career KO loss).

Edge: Condit

Wrestling

3 of 10

Another no-brainer for GSP.

GSP clearly has better wrestling than Condit, as he is known as one of the best wrestlers in the world of MMA.

Condit has shown to be able to attack and get off his back. GSP may have the more dominant wrestling, but it remains to be seen how well he will be able to utilize it.

Jiu-Jitsu

4 of 10

This one is another very straightforward category.

GSP is a black belt in BJJ—Condit a purple belt.

Clearly GSP has the edge, although Condit has shown skills beyond his belt level, as evidenced by his 13 career submissions.

GSP only has five.

Belt level doesn't mean anything, but for now, GSP has the edge.

Edge: GSP

Chin

5 of 10

I do not believe in GSP's chin, and that is not without precedent.

Remember UFC 69? Remember Matt Serra?

I rest my case.

Condit is a veteran of 27 MMA fights, and he has never been stopped by strikes.

Edge: Condit

Cardio

6 of 10

GSP gets the edge in this one based on the experience of having gone the full five rounds five times, including the past four in a row.

It's not often you hear that's a good thing, but in this case, it gives him the advantage of multiple five-round fights under his belt. No pun intended.

I'm not saying Condit couldn't last all five, but he hasn't gone five before (he's only gone three, three times), so GSP gets the edge.

Edge: GSP

Experience

7 of 10

Believe it or not, Condit has an edge in experience over GSP.

Condit and GSP both started fighting back in 2002, but in that time, Condit has had 32 fights, GSP has had 24.

Not only has Condit had more fights, and therefore more experience, but he is also younger, which gives him an additional edge.

Edge: Condit

Killer Instinct

8 of 10

Any doubt here?

Condit has finished his opponent in 26 of his 27 victories. Only three men have made it all 15 minutes with him.

GSP has not stopped an opponent on his own since UFC 83, three years ago. He has gone to a decision in five of his last six fights.

Edge: Condit

Winner

9 of 10

That's right. I'm picking the upset in this fight. GSP will finally fall—again.

Condit is an absolute finisher. he also has possibly the best killer instinct in the entire sport of MMA.

Combine that with his raw KO power and submission game beyond that which his belt rank would indicate, he looks dangerous to anyone.

In this fight, it is almost a guarantee that GSP will look to take down Condit and lay on him. Unfortunately for GSP, every fight starts on the feet and Condit has shown an incredible ability to gain top position or get back up.

You can say you heard it here first.

Prediction: Carlos Condit by third-round KO
