Wrestling Q&A #2: Shawn Michaels Returning, Clean Wins Over John Cena, More

Eric KanesJun 7, 2018

What's up, ladies and gentlemen? My name is Eric Kanes and this is the second ever edition of my weekly wrestling Q&A, which will be a Tuesday thing from now on. Earlier this week, I asked my Facebook friends to send in some pro wrestling questions. I then chose the best ones and answered them in the video above. Here is a transcript of the questions that I answered:

Do you want to see the WWE and World Heavyweight titles unified?

Yes. The titles being merged is definitely something I want to see because of the major lack of legitimate main eventers. The only legitimate ones are John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk, and Triple H and the others like Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio are pretty much just mid-carders, occasionally used in the main event scene. And when mid-carders are used in main events so often, it really means a lot less every time they win the world title, if that makes sense.

Yes, if the titles were merged that would mean that they would almost always be on guys like Randy Orton and John Cena, but you know what? It would mean that much more anytime a mid-carder was pushed to the main event level. As it is now, we constantly see guys like Christian, Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, and even Dolph Ziggler competing for the world titles but does anybody actually take them seriously as main eventers? Obviously not. Anyway, that's just my take on this.

With the current WWE commentary teams being disastrous, what would your ideal commentary teams look like?

This one's pretty easy. First of all, I'd get Booker the hell out of there because he's just horrible and his commentary style hurts the show a lot. When you can't understand half of what your color commentator is saying, you know he needs to be replaced. So on the SmackDown side, I'd replace Booker with William Regal and have him as the heel color commentator, I'd replace Josh Matthews with Matt Striker, just because Striker is a lot less generic and actually has some personality, and I'd replace Michael Cole with Joey Styles as the play-by-play guy. Two hours of Michael Cole a week is MORE than enough for me.

On the RAW side, I'd keep Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and Jim Ross together except I'd let JR talk more and I'd tone down Cole's heel mannerisms. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a lot better as a heel than he is as a face but there's really no need to have him constantly bury everyone. It accomplishes nothing. So, my final commentary teams would be Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, and Michael Cole on RAW and William Regal, Matt Striker, and Joey Styles on SmackDown.

Do you think the rating of the content really matters when it comes to quality?

No, I honestly don't think that the TV rating matters at all. What a lot of people don't understand is that the Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression Era cannot be duplicated because the same talent is just not there. We don't have guys like Stone Cold, The Rock, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, and Edge anymore, just to name a few. The reason the PG Era has been inferior to those eras is because the mid-card, tag team division, divas division, cruiserweight division which has been completely killed, and other areas are lacking. It's not because of the TV rating at all. Occassionally, we can have classic rivalries such as Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho, CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy, and John Cena vs. Nexus but those great rivalries aren't as frequent because the same talent is just not there.

Do you think Shawn Michaels has just one more run in him?

No, I don't think he does - not because he is physically unable but because, come on, he's 46. The only reason somebody his age would come out of retirement is if they need money but from what I've heard, he's pretty much set and he's dead set on staying retired so, good for him, you know? He's pretty much accomplished everything he needed to accomplish and given us as fans as much he can so I respect his decision to stay retired.

Do you think Sting will ever work for WWE?

Again, no - I don't. He's 52 years old and I think 80% of the current WWE fans have never even heard of him. It would really make no sense to bring him in unless they go with a WCW-themed Hall of Fame and it's a one-time appearance.

At this point, which is more valuable - a Royal Rumble win, a Money in the Bank win, or a clean win over John Cena?

You know, this one really got me because it's really tough to say but after giving it some thought, I have to say that a clean win over John Cena is just as prestigious as a Royal Rumble or Money in the Bank win. Now, let me explain this one. At this point, there are so few upper midcarders ready to move on to the main event scene that every year, some random mid-carder wins Money in the Bank, they get a month as world champion, and then they go back to where they were before. Money in the Bank really only worked for three people - Edge, Rob Van Dam, and The Miz, while it didn't really do much for all of the other winners. A Royal Rumble win used to be the most prestigious thing ever but nowadays it no longer guarantees an actual main event at WrestleMania, because as you saw, this year's winner lost in the opening match so it has definitely taken a drop in prestige. On the other hand, ever since he became a mega-star, how many people have gotten clean wins over John Cena? Let me list the ones that I can think of - Edge, instantly became a star, Rob Van Dam, instantly became a star, Randy Orton, already was a star, Shawn Michaels, already was a mega-star, Batista, already was a mega-star, Triple H, already a mega-star, and most recently, CM Punk, who is now the hottest name in pro wrestling. Since Cena has pretty much become unbeatable and so few people have fairly defeated him, I think it's safe to say that getting a clean win over him is as prestigious as winning Money in the Bank or the Royal Rumble and if you don't agree with me, look at the names I just mentioned for proof.
