New England Patriots' Tom Brady Is Open to a Randy Moss Reunion

John SzurlejJun 5, 2018

NFL.com ran an article in which Patriots' Quarterback Tom Brady said he was open to reuniting with former Patriot receiver Randy Moss and, in fact, was even encouraging it.

Moss' retirement has been watched closely and many people feel that Moss isn't finished, but rather waiting to see if the right suitor will call upon him.

There are concerns in New England about the chemistry between free agent Chad Ochocinco and Brady and, despite Ochocinco's reputation, he's had a mediocre training camp.

Another concern is the ability of Wes Welker given his size and effectiveness coming off an injury.

Welker has been a great receiver for the Patriots, but his roles were primarily as a No. 2 or No. 3 type receiver, which helped contribute to his effectiveness.

Brady's statements could be nothing more than wishful thinking, but given the current situation in New England regarding receiver depth, it may have been a sign of things to come.

Moss had some of his most memorable seasons in New England, highlighted by his 2007 campaign when he and Brady set an NFL record with 23 touchdowns for a single season.

Moss scored 50 touchdowns for the Patriots during his tenure there and was on top of the NFL world until his falling out with the organization.

Moss is rumored to be interested in returning to the NFL and, especially, in returning to New England if they called upon him.

If this is a legitimate possibility, it could be worth the gamble for the former Patriot to return home.

Moss has always played his best football with a chip on his shoulder and if he returns to New England he would have something to prove to Patriots fans, and to NFL fans in general.

Simply stated, Moss would want to show everyone that he isn't done, and the way he left the game wasn't a reflection of his ability.

The downside to this is, of course, the negative baggage that accompanies Randy wherever he goes. His ego and attitude have notorious reputations and have poisoned many locker rooms.

Furthermore, it is up in the air as to whether New England's current resident diva Chad Ochocinco would play nice with Randy Moss.

Chad Ochocinco hasn't shown the ability to handle competition or another star stealing his limelight.  When in Cincinnati Chad was shown up by 37-year-old Terrell Owens, and Ochocinco's frustration became evident on the field and on the sidelines.

Could Chad deal with something of this magnitude? I say, even if he didn't want to he would have to or else face the wrath of King Belichick.

The possibility of Moss returning to New England is not a sure thing, and all of this attention could be for naught.  If it were to become a reality, however, I think it would be in the Patriots' best interest.

New England has their biggest challenge this year with the New York Jets posing a huge threat to claim the division and, considering the past few season's early playoff exits, the Patriots need to do whatever they can to keep on pace with other teams.

The addition of Randy Moss may rub people the wrong way, but it is a sensible move to make; one that I see as happening.

I consider Brady's comments his way of letting the NFL know what is in store and for that reason I expect Moss to be back in uniform by Week 3.
