Donald Young: Resurgence of American Men at US Open Is Great Sign for Tennis

Donald WoodSep 6, 2011

After all of the hype that could surround a young player, tennis prospect Donald Young’s potential is finally coming to fruition at the 2011 US Open.

Young has been on the tour since he was 18 years old, but he couldn’t match the grand success that he had while competing on the junior tour. Now that he is 22 years old, a few seasons of experience look to have calmed his nerves and prepared him for the big stage.

While Young has worked very hard at his craft, years of failing took their toll on the young star, and many people close to the situation felt that Young would never amount to anything.

Young told the New York Daily News about his career struggles:

"

You have your highs and lows in tennis. I've definitely had the lows. Hopefully I'll have a lot more highs. You don't just quit work if you are a smart person and sit around if you want to eat and have a lifestyle you enjoy. I love tennis. It wasn't that I didn't love tennis. I just hate losing. That was pretty much the issue for me.

"

With the rise of another American star on the ATP Tour, the hope from the people running the show is that another American in the competition will draw more viewers from the United States.

Since the retirement of tennis legends Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, the American stranglehold on the sport hasn’t been there on the men’s side.

The Williams sisters have done an amazing job keeping America's presence in women’s tennis strong, but the men have really dropped the ball.

The hope now is that American players like Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and Donald Young can keep up their recent success and unseat the foreign stars like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

If the Americans start to take over in the rankings, more fans will be drawn in to see how their countrymen fair.
