5 Players Who Should Be Dealt by the 2011 NFL Trade Deadline
The start of the 2011 regular season is upon us and many teams are still looking to improve their roster before taking the field for their first meaningful game of the year.
While there are still a few fairly big names on the free-agent market, the list of potential impact players is scarce and teams should be looking at possible trade targets in order to fill any needs they may have remaining.
There are some very good players who could still be on the move this season after what was one of the craziest offseasons we have ever seen.
Here is a look at five players who should be traded before the NFL trade deadline.
Tim Tebow
1 of 5Tebow started his career in Denver living the good life in the Broncos penthouse, but that has all changed and very quickly, as the former first-round selection now finds himself in the team's outhouse.
If the Broncos aren't going to play Tebow—or even make it known that they like him more than their other backup Brady Quinn—it's time to trade their once-prized possession.
Miami would be a good landing spot for Tebow, as he could go back to his glory days in Florida and play for a team that could use an upgrade from its current starter, Chad Henne.
Whether Tebow would offer an upgrade is up for debate, but the move would make sense for both teams, and Denver and Timmy T could both move on.
Osi Umenyiora
2 of 5Things just don't seem to be going the Giants' way this season as they have already lost numerous key players to major injuries and they have yet to step on the field for a meaningful game this year.
Umenyiora spent plenty of time away from Giants training camp as he waited to be traded, but a trade never came and now he is back with the team.
The fact that New York drafted more for value than need is going to come back to bite the team this season as the injuries continue to mount, and that is why New York needs to acquire more ammo for the 2012 draft.
Trading Umenyiora could net the Giants another impact piece in next year's draft, and the team will still be just fine at defensive end without him.
Steve Slaton
3 of 5It remains to be seen how healthy Arian Foster is going to be come Week 1, but the Texans have three quality running backs on their roster at this time and they would be smart to move one of them once the trade deadline creeps closer.
Slaton should be the odd man out in Houston with Ben Tate sticking around to back up Foster for the remainder of the 2011 season.
Houston has already made it clear that Foster will be receiving the majority of the touches for the Texans this year, so why keep three backs?
If Foster is not 100 percent for the first few weeks of the season, why not give Slaton some touches now and then to build up a little trade interest in him? It can't hurt.
Asante Samuel
4 of 5Samuel has been to the Pro Bowl in each of the past four seasons for the Eagles, but he is no longer the top dog in the Philly secondary.
One could argue he isn't even the second-best corner on the squad (I wouldn't argue that point, but some would) now that Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have both joined him in the Eagles secondary.
I don't expect Philadelphia to win the Super Bowl this season—or even the NFC East for that matter (the Cowboys will bounce back)—and with so many one-year contracts on their veteran-laden team, the Eagles have to be somewhat concerned with their future.
The Eagles almost certainly will not trade Samuel before the trade deadline, but they should at least consider it.
Kenny Britt
5 of 5The Titans have cleaned up their team in the past few seasons with the departures of Albert Haynesworth and Vince Young and the arrivals of Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker, but they still have more house-cleaning to partake in.
Britt was not suspended by Roger Goodell despite many run-ins with the law during the lockout, and now the Titans should still be concerned about their top receiver.
Maybe Britt will stay out of trouble now that he is back to football, but he has yet to prove he is capable of doing so and that could become a problem for Tennessee in the future.
The Titans should get what they can for Britt, which should be a decent haul, and look to move on as they continue building for the future.
