Three Reasons Why the Boston Red Sox Need To Re-Sign David Ortiz

Sean O'NeilSep 5, 2011

David Ortiz's contract with the Boston Red Sox ends after the conclusion of this season and the question still remains: will the Sox re-sign Big Papi?

I think that Ortiz will be signed to another two year contract with Boston and he will finish up his career at Fenway Park.

Here are three reasons why.

2011 Performance

1 of 3

For the past three seasons, Big Papi struggled for the first month or two. It seemed as if Ortiz could only perform for half a season and he wouldn't be very useful after 2011.

He proved everyone wrong this season.

He is having his best year since 2007, sporting a batting average of .314 with 28 home runs and 89 RBI.

Ortiz has shown that he still has a couple of years left in the tank and Boston could use his offense for one or two more seasons.

The Need for a DH

2 of 3

The position of designated hitter in the American League is not an easy position to fill.

Many players seem incapable of only hitting the ball all game without fielding. Ortiz, on the other hand, is the exact opposite and is arguably one of the best designated hitters in history. So why not hold on to the No. 1 guy?

Also, considering that the prospects in Boston's organization who could play the DH position full time still need a couple of years to develop, Ortiz is the perfect fit.

Attitude

3 of 3

All I ever hear from players on the Red Sox, when asked about Ortiz, is how they cannot imagine the locker room at Fenway without Big Papi.

He is the spirit of the team. He brings a positive attitude with him to the field every day and let's face it, the guy is always smiling.

Having a presence like his in the locker room is irreplaceable. The players have let it be known and if general manager Theo Epstein wants to be smart about this, he will re-sign David Ortiz for a couple more years.

He can still produce, he's the best at his position and everyone loves the guy.

Bring him back.
