The Contender Who Will Dethrone Anderson Silva, GSP and Each UFC Champion

Sean SmithJun 4, 2018

With four UFC champions who have defended titles in three or more consecutive fights, MMA fans are witnessing levels of talent never before seen in the Octagon. Add a potentially great Jon Jones to the already dominant champions who grace the cage and it is hard to predict when some of the current UFC titleholders will be dethroned.

Even the greatest fighters fall by the wayside at some point, but predicting when that moment will happen is about as easy as standing in the pocket with Anderson Silva. Like Forrest Griffin, I'm a risk taker, though.

Here are the fighters who will eventually dethrone the current champions in each of the UFC's seven weight divisions.

Heavyweight: Junior dos Santos

1 of 7

Cain Velasquez has taken apart his last two opponents with striking. However, standing with his first challenger, Junior dos Santos, is unlikely to have the same result. Possibly the most devastating striker in the heavyweight division, dos Santos could knock Velasquez out in an exchange.

Velasquez has an outstanding wrestling base, but dos Santos has shown equally impressive takedown defense and improved wrestling in his seven fights under the UFC banner.

If any current fighter on the UFC heavyweight roster is going to dethrone Velasquez, it is going to be dos Santos.

Light Heavyweight: Lyoto Machida

2 of 7

After seeing Jon Jones dismantle Mauricio Rua with ease, it sounds crazy to say that Lyoto Machida may have the tools to hand Jones his first setback, but "The Dragon" may be the only light heavyweight fighter with the tools to dethrone the champion.

Machida's elusive style has frustrated wrestlers in the past, so it could be the formula to take out Jones. That is not to say Machida would be a favorite to beat Jones. It would probably take some luck, but it is hard to see any of the other 205-pound contenders putting together the right game plan to beat Jones.

Middleweight: Anderson Silva

3 of 7

Yes, you read that right. Anderson Silva will remove himself from the peak of the UFC's middleweight division.

No, this is not some play on Silva's words that he would like to fight his clone. After winning a rematch against Chael Sonnen, there will be nothing left for Silva in the middleweight division.

At that point, Silva will move onto superfights or retirement.

Welterweight: Rory MacDonald

4 of 7

Unless Georges St-Pierre makes a move to middleweight, his incredible run as welterweight champion will be ended at the hands of teammate Rory MacDonald.

Since a controversial loss to Carlos Condit, MacDonald has had a fire lit under his belly. Since that loss, MacDonald completely destroyed two opponents and moved into a spot as a serious contender in the 170-pound division.

Lightweight: Gray Maynard

5 of 7

After his first attempt to dethrone Frankie Edgar ended in an unfortunate draw, Gray Maynard will look to pace himself more effectively in his third meeting with the current lightweight champion.

An early knockout caused Maynard to expend much of his energy in gunning for the finish, which drained his cardio for the later rounds of the five-round fight.

If Maynard remains calm and sticks to a game plan in his next fight with Edgar, he could become the new 155-pound titleholder.

Featherweight: Chad Mendes

6 of 7

Jose Aldo is most well known for his incredible striking ability. However, the Brazilian featherweight is also very skilled on the ground.

Nonetheless, Chad Mendes has the smothering wrestling ability to grind out a victory over the 145-pound champion.

After winning the first 11 fights of his career in dominant fashion, it is only a matter of time until Mendes gets his chance to fight for the featherweight belt.

Bantamweight: Urijah Faber

7 of 7

After fighting to a close decision loss to Dominick Cruz in his second fight with the bantamweight kingpin, Urijah Faber has been given a title shot eliminator bout with Brian Bowles.

With a win over Bowles, Faber could find himself in a rubber match with Cruz.

If Faber can make the right adjustments from his recent title fight against the 135-pound champion, we may finally see a UFC belt around the Team Alpha Male leader's waist.
