Arsenal Transfer News: 6 Last-Minute Predictions for Deadline Day

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been working hard over the past few days to make up for a poor summer transfer window.

The Gunners' boss is finally starting to see some results with the arrival of Andre Santos and Per Metesacker. The defensive duo should help solidify a back line that was embarrassed against Manchester United last weekend.

Wenger continues to work the phones in search of some attacking help in the midfield. The loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri won't be totally offset no matter how many moves are made today, but at least the Gunners are trying to right the ship.

Here are six last-minute predictions for deadline day at Emirates.

Adam Johnson Will Not Be Joining Arsenal

1 of 6

Arsenal have been linked to Manchester City's 24-year-old midfielder all day after it was revealed the English international could be moved at the right price.

While the Gunners certainly have the cash to make a deal happen, so do several other teams with a higher likelihood of contending for trophies this season. Arsenal will struggle to bring in high-profile talent like Johnson until they are legitimate contenders once again.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that they won't get Johnson, however. The boatload of cash that would have been spent to bring him in would have placed an unbearable amount of pressure on his shoulders. Players usually struggle in those scenarios.

Watch for Possible Renato Augusto Move

2 of 6

Renato Augusto of the German club Bayer Leverkusen is an intriguing option for Arsenal while some of the other big-name clubs get caught up looking into Adam Johnson.

Augusto is a playmaker that could boost the Arsenal offense in several ways. Not only does he have fantastic vision on the attack, but last season he really started to develop a knack for when to shoot instead of always preferring to pass.

It's unclear what Bayer Leverkusen would be asking for the 23-year-old Brazilian, but he's an interesting possibility that continues to fly under the radar.

Mikel Arteta Would Be Great Addition, Health Willing

3 of 6

When Mikel Arteta is on the field, he's a game-changing player that can turn the momentum of a game around in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, he has trouble staying on the field.

The 29-year-old Everton midfielder has scored twice in as many starts in the early going, after healing a nagging injury of course. He's speculated to be one of several chips the Toffees are attempting to move because of their financial woes.

It's no secret that the Gunners are in need of some creativity in the midfield and Arteta would provide that and more. It's just a question of whether or not Arsenal joined the discussions in time.

Kaka and Wesley Sneijder Are Not Legitimate Options

4 of 6

In the frenzy that is deadline day, a lot of names get thrown around recklessly. For some of the lesser-name players, it has become expected. For big names like Kaka and Wesley Sneijder, it's craziness.

Sneijder has time and again reaffirmed his commitment to Internazionale and will be remaining with the Nerazzurri well past the current window. The same goes for Kaka. Although he's been floated into the market by Real Madrid, Arsenal haven't shown any real interest in the midfielder.

If you see any Kaka or Wesley Sneijder rumors that link them to Arsenal, just consider them having the same chance of being true as if you read Pele was making a comeback with the Gunners.

Juan Vargas Could Still Be Emirates Bound

5 of 6

While Renato Augusto and Mikel Arteta remain higher on Arsene Wenger's wish list, don't completely count out Fiorentina midfielder Juan Vargas.

The 27-year-old playmaker would be a nice fit in Arsenal's quick ball movement system. He proved capable of handling the big stage as well, picking up two goals and four assists in eight Champions League contests last season.

Arsenal has been doing its due diligence on him, likely in case their other deals fall through, but no offer has been made. If they do acquire him, it would probably be right up against the deadline.

Arsene Wenger Will Say He's Pleased with Additions

6 of 6

Once the deadline has officially passed and the wheeling and dealing comes to a close, the long-time Arsenal manager will says he's pleased with the additions. That's more of a guarantee than a prediction.

It doesn't matter how many more moves he makes, if any, he needs to instill some confidence back into the fan base. Any time a manager has to publicly state he's not going to quit, you know the situation is getting tense.

He's already made a couple additions that should have a positive impact on the defense. If he can make one or two moves to improve the attack, his comments will be more sincere than if he stands pat from here on out.
