NFL Roster Cuts 2011: Raiders Players Who Are and Should Be on the Way Out
Roster cuts are never fun for players, coaches or fans.
NFL Rosters must be down to only 53 players for game days. Besides players on IR, the PUP or the practice squad, the rest must be cut.
Many teams, the Raiders included, are over 80 and need to cut over a dozen people to get to get under the roster limit.
The Raiders already made a few cuts, but more are sure to follow.
Here is a look at who is gone, and who else should be cleaning out their lockers.
Tuesday's Moves
1 of 6The Raiders parted ways with fullback Bryson Kelly, receivers Damola Adeniji and Steve Goulet, safety Josh Bullocks, offensive lineman Ben Lamaak, defensive tackle Derrick Hill and offensive tackle Lou Eliades.
Also of note was the placement of linebacker Travis Goethel, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp last week.
Rock Cartwright
2 of 6I don't think Cartwright is bad, but he is limited.
He's a third running back at best and based on the last preseason game, Taiwan Jones is going to have a much bigger impact for the Raiders this year.
Cartwright is a solid special teamer, but unfortunately, he is also replaceable in that field as well.
Roy Schuening
3 of 6The Raiders have troubles on the offensive line, but Schuening isn't really the best answer. The Raiders need to make a big move and go after the recently released Andre Gurode.
Schuening might be the casualty in this case. He was a Raider in 2009 but was cut when they signed JP Losman. Someone who gets cut for JP Losman can't be an impact player. It's in the definition.
Matt Giordano
4 of 6Another space-filling move.
Giordano is an energetic player who spent his college years at Cal. He's just a bit undersized for the NFL for that's why he's been bouncing around after leaving the Colts.
The Raiders signed him because they needed some safety depth for the preseason. The injuries should fade and Giordano will find himself without a team once again.
Trent Edwards
5 of 6I'm still reeling over signing Edwards in the first place.
He's been awful in both of his games played so far in the preseason. With Terrelle Pryor on board, I'd rather go with two QB's for the first few games rather than ever give Edwards the chance to screw up a game.
Nick Miller
6 of 6As much as I like the guy, his abilities are redundant on the Raiders many times over.
Miller has tried to be a wide receiver, punt returner and play kick coverage. He hasn't been great so far at any of them.
He's a great hustle player, but there are a number of players, like Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford, who are far more versatile and talented.
I don't believe the roster will be able to hold Miller much longer.
