Arizona Diamondbacks: Team Sweeps San Diego, Turns Attention to Colorado Rockies

Matt BowenJun 1, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks finished their three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres to extend their win streak to six games. This is the second six-game winning streak for the Diamondbacks this month.

Cy Young candidate Ian Kennedy completed the sweep of the Padres on Sunday. Kennedy earned his NL-leading 17th win with a seven-inning, seven-strikeout performance. Kennedy is now 7-0 against the NL West this season.

The Diamondbacks were powered on offense by newcomer Aaron Hill and rookie Collin Cowgill on Sunday. Hill hit his first homer as a Diamondback while Cowgill hit his first career home run.

Needless to say, things are really clicking in the desert right now.

The D'Backs now have an NL West-best 75-59 record with a four-game lead over the San Francisco Giants. This is no time to get comfortable. Closing the deal down the stretch is the hardest part. The Diamondbacks have 28 games left, 25 of which are against the division.

The Diamondbacks begin a three-game set at home on Monday versus the underachieving but dangerous Colorado Rockies. Baseball fans know quite well that Colorado is known for never giving up and fighting until the end.

Arizona pitchers will have to be careful pitching to Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez. He has been on a tear of late, bringing in a 15-game hitting streak in which he has hit .417. During his streak, Gonzalez has hit eight homers, scored 18 runs and plated 26 RBI. These numbers are astronomical, and the D'Backs may have to issue an intentional walk or two to the Rockies slugger.

Kirk Gibson will have his men ready to continue their winning ways. The skipper is beginning to make true believers out of his ball club. The next month of baseball is where the Arizona Diamondbacks get to prove their worth.

The Diamondbacks look to play well in the series against the Rockies before heading into San Francisco for a weekend treat.
