MLB Trade Rumors: Top 10 Players Who Could Still Move at Waiver-Wire Deadline

Robert KnapelAug 28, 2011

The wavier trade deadline does not draw as much attention as the non-wavier trade deadline.

However, moves made before this deadline are still very important to teams that are trying to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

There are a number of players who have cleared waivers could be moved.

Other players could be claimed and teams could attempt to work out deals.

B.J. Upton

1 of 10

Over the weekend, B.J. Upton was claimed on waivers. The Rays have until August 29th to reach a deal with the team that claimed him. It is possible that the Rays can work something out since they were looking to move him in July.

Upton will be a big addition to the lineup of the team that claimed him.

He has a great combination of power and speed.

Hideki Matusi

2 of 10

Hideki Matsui has already cleared waivers earlier this month. He had a very strong July, and he has been fairly good in August. Matsui should draw attention from teams looking for outfield help.

Matsui is also appealing because he has less than $2 million left on his contract for this season. Acquiring Matsui would be a cheap and effective way for a team to bolster their outfield.

Alfonso Soriano

3 of 10

Moving Alfonso Soriano has become more unlikely recently because of the fact that Jim Hendry was fired as the Cubs GM.

The interim GM Randy Bush may not be able to make any deals.

Soriano's has a massive contract that will also serve as a deterrent to many teams.

However, the Chicago Cubs have said that they are willing to pay a large chunk of the contract if they are able to move him.

Carlos Zambrano

It is looking more and more likely that Carlos Zambrano will not be wearing a Chicago Cubs uniform next season.

He has already cleared waivers, but the Cubs will need to eat a lot of money to move him.

Zambrano's antics have gotten him placed on the disqualified list, and many teams don't believe that having him and his attitude on their roster is a good decision.

He also has $22 million left on his contract for next year.

Chris Capuano

5 of 10

Chris Capuano became a lot more desirable after he pitched one of the best games in New York Mets franchise history against the Braves on August 26th. He threw a two-hitter and struck out 13 while walking none.

Capuano has already cleared waivers, so any team can try to work out a deal to acquire him. He is a free agent after the year, so the Mets may look to move him.

The Mets have also expressed an interest in resigning him after the year, so he will not be cheap.

Jeff Francis

6 of 10

Jeff Francis has not had a great season this year, but if you look past his win-loss record and his ERA, it is not to hard to see that Francis could actually be a solid fifth starter for a team for the remainder of the season.

Francis will be a free agent after the season and likely does not fit into the Kansas City Royals plans for the future.

Bruce Chen

7 of 10

Bruce Chen has cleared waivers and is one of the more desirable pitchers that will be available in a deal in August. Chen has put together a decent year in the Royals rotation, and he can also pitch out of the bullpen.

His versatility makes Chen a potential target for a number of teams.

Chen also has only a few hundred thousand dollars left on his deal for this year so any team will be able to afford him.

Johnny Damon

8 of 10

With the Tampa Bay Rays out of contention this season, there is a chance that they could look to move Johnny Damon.

He has already cleared waivers, so any team can try to work out a deal for him.

While Damon may not be the player that he was a few years ago, he could still help a team in contention as third or fourth outfielder.

Damon also brings veteran leadership and playoff success to the table.

Jason Vargas

9 of 10

It seems like contenders are always looking for pitching help. Jason Vargas has already cleared waivers, and the Seattle Mariners' pitcher could be a great addition to the back end of any team's rotation.

Vargas is under team control through the 2013 season which makes him even more desirable. However, this also means that the Mariners will expect a lot in a deal for him.

Bronson Arroyo

10 of 10

Bronson Arroyo has been awful for the Cincinnati Reds this season so it is no surprise that he passed through waivers.

However, Arroyo does have a track record of success that makes him appealing to a number of teams.

Arroyo does not become a free agent until after the 2013 season, and there seems to be little reason for the Reds to deal him other than to get out of his contract.

However, if they get overwhelmed by an offer, Arroyo will be on the move.
