UFC 134 Results: Where Does Forrest Griffin Go from Here?
On Saturday night, Forrest Griffin (18-7) was decimated in the first round by Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (20-5) in a first-round KO loss.
Forrest has now gone 2-3 in his last five fights, and one is left to wonder...where does he go from here?
During Forrest's recent stretch, his three losses have come to some of the best fighters in the UFC, in Rashad Evans, Anderson Silva and now Shogun.
Unfortunately, his two wins have been against over-the-hill veterans Rich Franklin and Tito Ortiz.
Forrest sure isn't looking like he can hang with the best of the best anymore, although he is still a consensus top 10 light heavyweight.
Could Forrest be on the downside of his career, stuck with gatekeeper status until the day he retires?
Unfortunately, it may be so.
Forrest has been unable to defeat the top light heavyweights, so he will most likely not be getting back to the belt anytime soon.
It makes sense for Forrest to take on the up-and-coming light heavyweights, and he will be the one who tests them for the first time to see if they're the real deal or not.
Just because Forrest may only be a gatekeeper doesn't mean he isn't still dangerous, though.
Forrest is one of the toughest dudes in the UFC, and has a very well-rounded game to go along with that.
Forrest is a brawler who will just go out there and fight you. No real game plan, just go out and fight.
Along with his brawler mentality, he has some solid wrestling, and should the fight go to the ground, Forrest has a very underrated jiu-jitsu game. I channeled my inner Joe Rogan there.
Forrest is still a fan favorite, and he always has a place in the UFC, so expect him to be around for awhile longer, and he will continue to put on entertaining fights for the fans, even if he won't come close to a belt again.
Maybe Forrest will face off against up-and-comer Alexander Gustafsson next.
