UFC 134 Results: Anderson Silva Needs to Fight Jon Jones, Not Georges St. Pierre
After yet another stunning victory, Anderson Silva has silenced any of the critics that still thought he wasn’t the best fighter in the world by knocking out Yushin Okami during UFC 134.
Many experts believed that Silva had a real chance of losing the fight because Okami was the last man to ever gain a victory over Silva; but that was a DQ loss for Silva due to an illegal kick.
No matter what Okami tried, Silva had an answer, and while the first round was slower than many expected, that was only because Silva was testing the waters and reading Okami’s reactions.
There hasn’t been a fighter to dominate his division like Silva, and even at 36 years old, he is still fighting in his prime.
While the bout was supposed to be fairly even, Dana White told Fight Opinion after the fight:
"I think everybody who knows anything about Mixed Martial Arts knew what the game plan was for Okami and he went for it. Get up against that fence, get in the clinch, and try to work from there and rough him up and try to get him to the ground. He got him in the clinch and started get caught to the body with those big knees, didn’t like it, didn’t like being here, I guarantee you …his corner was saying do not stand out in the middle with him, get him against the cage, try to take him down but he absolutely could not impose his will tonight, he couldn’t implement his game plan… and, you know, I’ll say it again, like I’ve said a million times, this guy is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world and, in my opinion, the best fighter ever.
"
With utter dominance for the 15th straight time, Anderson Silva has proved time and time again that he is the best fighter in the world, and most certainly the best in the middleweight division.
In the light of such dominance, questions about jumping weight classes naturally arise, and dream matches start to be talked about. The UFC world wants a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, and Silva would give that to them if he moved up or down in weight classes.
Many yearn for Silva to drop weight and fight at welterweight against Georges St. Pierre, but Silva would destroy GSP. A better fight would be Silva moving up to light-heavyweight and face Jon Jones.
Silva would have no problem moving up to 205 pounds, and he is the only fighter as naturally gifted as Jones. Both their styles and attitudes are similar, and the matchup would be an all-time great event.
The problem is Silva doesn’t have to prove anything anymore, and he will not leave the middleweight division.
Sorry fight nuts.
