Colin Kaepernick: Analyzing the Rookie's Performance Against the Texans
After watching the game on Saturday, I was pretty disappointed to say the least. Jim Harbaugh, Colin Kaepernick, and the 2011 San Francisco 49ers have a very long path ahead.
It appears the blocking problem we had against the Saints is back. And amongst other garbage play, our second and third-string receivers looked pretty damn horrible (aside from Kyle Williams and Ted Ginn). Particularly Ronald Johnson, who is apparently having great practices. Good for him, but his games have been bad. Sorry Ronald, I was pulling for you.
But how did my favorite topic do?

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
6-for-16, 52 yards, 1 pick and 1 sack. In other words, not so hot.
Initially, the wind in my sails dissipated. The first time I watched it was with my sons and I really couldn't pay close attention—Dad duties do come first—but the second and third time, I went back through and took notes on every passing down he had.
I discovered Kaepernick actually did okay. Still along way to go, but not as bad as I thought. Take a look for yourself.
Here is a quick summary of every passing down Colin Kaepernick had against the Texans:
1- Pass to Konrad Reuland - Drop
2- Pass to Delanie Walker - Complete
3- Pass to Braylon Edwards - Drop
4- Pass - Deflected at the line
5- Interception - Pick 6, Bad Judgement, Late on the throw, Followed receiver the entire way.
6- Pass to Delanie Walker - Drop
7- High Pressure - Scrambled and avoided sack. Threw the ball away.
8- Pass to Ronald Johnson - Drop
9- Pass to Lance Long - Complete
10- Forced into tight coverage - Incomplete
11- Pass to Konrad Reuland - Complete
12- Pass to Bruce Miller - Complete
13- Pass to Kyle Williams - Complete
14- High Pressure - Scrambled and avoided sack. Deep to Williams. Not enough Loft - Incomplete
15- Pass to Kevin Jurovich - Drop
16- Sack - Blown protection
17- Pass to Dominique Zeigler - Complete
Totals
5 Drops - Jurovich 1, Johnson 1, Walker 1, Edwards 1, Reuland 1
6 Completions - Walker 1, Long 1, Reuland 1, Miller 1, Williams 1, Zeigler 1
1 Interception - Play 5
1 Sack - Play 16
2 Sacks Avoided - Plays 14, and 7
1 Deflection
2.5 Bad Plays out of 16 - Plays 5, 10, and .5 for over throwing the long ball on Play 14.
The crazy part about Kaepernick's assignment on Saturday wasn't that he was going against the first-string defense of the Texans. It was that he was throwing to second and third-string receivers and backs.
It is clear that Kaepernick has work to do, and throws like the one that led to the pick-six can't continue. But after pulling a Singletary and "looking at the film," I am still confident that Kaepernick can be a good quarterback for San Francisco soon.
I am more concerned about this so called, "deep offensive line" we are suppose to have. Make a block or something.
