UFC 134 Results: 8 Fights That Need to Be Made Coming out of UFC 134
The UFC went to Brazil for its latest event, and they are coming out of it with many potential matchups between former and current champions, including UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Silva defeated Yushin Okami in front of his hometown crowd by stopping the Japanese fighter in the second round.
In the co-main event, former UFC light-heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua walked through another former UFC light-heavyweight champion in Forrest Griffin.
Both fights were rematches where the winners turned the tables and got revenge against their opponents.
With that behind them now, they, as well as the other winners from tonight's card, can look forward to possible matchups.
These are eight matchups for tonight's winners and losers.
No. 8: Rousimar Palhares vs. Jared Hamman
1 of 8Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rousimar Palhares had an easy time in getting past Dan Miller, but it didn't come without a little confusion.
After thinking the fight was over, Palhares celebrated his victory not realizing the opponent he had just dropped was not out. Referee Herb Dean let both of them continue, but Palhares continued his dominance with his ground-and-pound and won a decision.
Jared Hamman is a former light-heavyweight fighter who recently made his middleweight debut against C.B. Dollaway earlier this month. Hamman overcame adversity in the first round to finish his opponent in the second round of a fan-friendly fight.
While both guys are looking to advance into the top of the division, this could be a good fight to eliminate one of them from getting there while the other advances forward.
No. 7: Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz 3
2 of 8Forrest Griffin came up short in his fight with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, losing by knockout in the first round.
Tito Ortiz is also coming off a recent defeat from UFC 133 to Rashad Evans in a rematch of a fight they had before. Ortiz was stopped in the second round. Just weeks before, he had picked up his first win since 2006 when he defeated Ryan Bader.
Both fighters are 1-1 against each other, so a rubber-match would be a welcoming addition to an upcoming Fight Night card or PPV.
Ortiz won the first fight, but it was Griffin who came back to win the rematch. All good trilogies need a final fight, and it's often the case that fans don't get to see it.
No. 6: Stanislav Nedkov vs. Ronny Markes
3 of 8UFC 134 kicked off its main card with a light-heavyweight bout featuring dangerous striker Luiz Cane and UFC newcomer Stanislav Nedkov.
Nedkov came into the fight with a perfect 11-0 record with wins over Travis Wiuff and Kevin Randleman and added another victim to his record after stopping Cane in the first round.
With his 12th victory in a row, Nedkov brings a new challenge to the UFC's light-heavyweight division. He's not ready for a high-tier opponent just yet, and didn't look the best during this fight. A low-tier opponent on a future UFC undercard or Fight Night event would suit him well.
Ronny Markes recently upset Karlos Vemola in the previous UFC Live event and has five victories by knockout and four by submission. Combine that with a similar amount of knockouts and submissions on Nedkov's record, and it makes for a great fight between two of the UFC's newest up-and-comers.
No. 5: Paulo Thiago vs. Duane Ludwig
4 of 8Thiago introduced himself to the MMA world by knocking out former UFC welterweight title challenger Josh Koscheck in 2009. He continued to pick up victories over tough fighters like Mike Swick and Jacob Volkmann, but was set back with losses to Jon Fitch, Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann.
He broke a two-fight losing streak after out-pointing David Mitchell on the undercard of UFC 134. Now, it's back to rebuilding his reputation as one of the UFC's top welterweight fighters.
Thiago has fought many of the top welterweights, but he could be content with taking a fight against MMA veteran Duane Ludwig, who is coming off an impressive victory over Amir Sadollah at UFC Live.
No. 4: Edson Barboza vs. Jacob Volkmann
5 of 8Edson Barboza won a highly-competitive and close decision against Ross Pearson earlier tonight, and it extends his undefeated record to 9-0 with six knockouts.
Jacob Volkmann, who is a former welterweight fighter, dropped down to lightweight in 2010 and has gone 4-0 with victories over Paul Kelly and Danny Castillo. He was last seen defeating the Team Alpha Male member earlier this month in a very impressive showing.
Barboza didn't display anything in the Pearson fight that sets him out in front of the other prospects in the division, but he is an exciting fighter to watch and is continuously showing improvement in his overall game.
This could be another test in the 25-year-old fighter's career.
No. 3: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Winner of Matt Mitrione/Cheick Kongo
6 of 8Perhaps the biggest winner to come out of Rio is Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who defeated Brendan Schaub in the very first round of their heavyweight fight.
Nogueira came into the fight as an underdog and had been on a 16-month layoff after losing to Cain Velasquez in February, 2010.
With his impressive victory over Schaub, Nogueira makes a case for a shot at another heavyweight prospect, and that could mean Matt Mitrione if he comes out the winner against Cheick Kongo at UFC 137.
Either fight would suit the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt well.
No. 2: Jon Jones vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua 2
7 of 8Mauricio "Shogun" Rua got revenge against a previous fighter to defeat him in Forrest Griffin in the co-main event on tonight's card. He is now 3/3 in rematches of fights that he previously had lost.
If he is interested in getting revenge against another man to beat him, and he is, then he can make the demands to challenge current UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones.
Jones takes on Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 135, and it will be the first title defense of his career. He won the title after stopping Rua in the third round of their bout in March.
Rua arguably wasn't in good shape during the fight with Jones, but his inconsistency in fights has been very telling. It would be interesting to see which Rua shows up if he ever meets Jones again.
No. 1: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2
8 of 8Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva fought before, and it wasn't looking good for the better part of five rounds for the UFC middleweight champion.
Sonnen easily handled the Brazilian fighter before being caught in a triangle-choke in the fifth round of the fight.
Despite tapping out, Sonnen still insists he is the people's champion. If he can't be beat physically, it will have to take a complete thrashing by Silva to prove he is the better man. He will need to beat Sonnen mentally, and that's not the easiest thing to do.
It will be tough to win alone considering how the first fight went down, but Silva is more motivated than ever to prove he is the best and will do whatever it takes to do that.
This may go down as one of the most anticipated rematches in the history of MMA. Sonnen has had more than enough to say about the fighter and his country, and now it's time for him to back it up.
