UFC on Versus 6: Dominick Cruz vs. Demetrious Johnson, Head-to-Toe Breakdown

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

On October 1st, the UFC goes to our nation's capital, Washington D.C.

The card will be the sixth card the UFC puts on Versus, and will feature the first title fight on free TV since UFC 75, when Rampage Jackson defended his light heavyweight title against Dan Henderson.

The title fight on the card pits Dominick Cruz (18-1) against Demetrious Johnson (10-1) for the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

Here's an early head-to-toe breakdown for the fight.

Striking

1 of 7

For striking, the edge goes to Cruz.

Cruz has been able to run through the WEC and UFC bantamweight divisions using his striking and quick combos to win rounds, bonuses and most importantly, fights.

He may only have six wins by (T)KO, so he doesn't always get the knockout, but he's always up there striking and looking to land the big shot.

Wrestling

2 of 7

In wrestling, this one has to be a push.

Demetrious Johnson uses his wrestling offense to take fighters down, wear them out and win decisions.

Dominick Cruz uses his wrestling in reverse, much like Chuck Liddell, to keep opponents on their feet and relentlessly pick them apart with quick strikes.

They both use their wrestling to accomplish different objectives, and I could easily be proven wrong come fight night, but until then, the edge can't go to either of these two.

Jits

3 of 7

As far as jiu-jitsu, the edge goes to Demetrious Johnson.

Johnson has won five fights in his career by submission, scoring three rear-naked chokes, one guillotine and one armbar.

Dominick Cruz is a blue belt in BJJ (the second-lowest ranking) and his wrestling game is good enough that any time he does hit the ground, he can get right back up.

Johnson has the edge in my book, but it isn't by all that much.

Speed

4 of 7

Demetrious also gets the edge for speed.

This one could have easily been a push, or go to Cruz, but you've got to give Demetrious a fighting chance, right?

Johnson is one of the quickest and most explosive fighters in the division, and Cruz could have his hands full trying to deal with that.

Or he could prove me wrong and have no trouble dealing with Johnson.

Elusiveness

5 of 7

As far as elusiveness, this one was a no-brainer.

Dominick Cruz is one of the most elusive fighters in the UFC, as he is able to jump in, land a solid combo and get back out of range before you can retaliate.

He also has some of the best footwork in MMA, which allows him to fight exactly how he wants to.

Cruz may have trouble with Johnson's speed, but Johnson will almost certainly have trouble with Cruz' elusiveness.

Winner

6 of 7

In the end, I'm going to go with most other people and say that Cruz pretty easily defends his bantamweight title.

Nobody is really giving Demetrious much of a chance, and there is reason for that.

Cruz has shown to be incredibly elusive and have great takedown defense, and Johnson's game is all about wrestling and controlling his opponents.

Not a great matchup on paper.

Of course this is a bantamweight fight between two of the best bantamweights in the world, so it is sure to be a fast-paced battle, but expect Cruz to pull out another five-round unanimous decision victory.
