4 Reasons Jon Jones Will Be the Greatest UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ever

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

Yes, that's right. It's another article about why Jon Jones (13-1) will be the best ever.

This article will be about why he will be known as a greater light heavyweight champion than Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture ever were.

Jones has so many tools at his disposal, and as long as he keeps his head on straight (which is easier said than done), he has all the potential in the world to achieve everything that everyone says he can.

Here are four reasons he will become the greatest light heavyweight champion ever.

His Youth

1 of 5

Everybody knows about how Jon Jones is the youngest champion in UFC history and all that jazz.

Not only is his youthfulness going to be helpful against guys like Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans, but Jones' youth in the sport will be huge.

Jones had his first MMA fight a little more than three years ago.

He is still going to improve by leaps and bounds every time he fights. I'd be even more scared for each successive opponent of his.

His Size

This is just another point that has been made again and again.

Jones is one of the tallest light heavyweights in the UFC, and one of the tallest fighters on the roster overall.

Along with his height advantage, Jones holds a reach advantage over every other fighter in the UFC. Yes, even the heavyweights.

Jones' height and reach advantage could be too much for many fighters to overcome.

All the Weapons He Has at His Disposal

Not only does he have the size advantage working for him, but he has national championship-caliber Greco-Roman wrestling, power in his strikes and some of the most unpredictable and unorthodox strikes around.

Jones has been able to throw strong wrestlers around (see Matt Hamill), he's been able to throw veterans around (see Stephan Bonnar), he's been able to take down and ground-and-pound wrestlers (see Vladimir Matyushenko) and he's been able to dominate legends (see Mauricio Rua).

Jones has not even been close to being in danger in a UFC fight, and at one point during his fight with Shogun, Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan even said, "Wow, Jon Jones was almost in a bad position."

When someone "almost" being in a bad position is a big deal, that fighter must be a big deal.

His Competition

4 of 5

I'm not talking about his competition for being the top light heavyweight champion of all time, which is Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

I'm talking about the competition he may face on his way to that title.

The light heavyweight division is one of the most stacked divisions in the UFC, and should Jones beat all of them, nobody will be able to deny that he has beaten the best light heavyweights around.

Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson, Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, Forrest Griffin, Phil Davis, Alexander Gustafsson and Thiago Silva.

All those men could be added to Jones' hit list.

He's beaten Shogun, at UFC 135 he'll take on Rampage, and should he get past Rampage, he'll take on Rashad Evans.

His next challenger after that would likely be the winner of Lyoto Machida-Mauricio Rua/ Forrest Griffin.

Should he get past all of them, he would have faced some of the stiffest competition the UFC has ever seen.
