WWE Rumor: Money in the Bank PPV Buyrate Released: My Analysis

Justin WatryJun 7, 2018

According to a recent report listed here, WWE received some good news about its July PPV show.

The Money in the Bank PPV got around 276,000 buys. Of course, the show was headlined by CM Punk and his "final match" against John Cena and the WWE title being on the line.

Add on a packed arena in Chicago that night, and it looks like WWE had a very successful show.

However, the question comes up: How does this buy-rate compare to last year's MITB PPV?

Well, this year scored over 100,000 more buys than last year. Yeah, I would say WWE had some serious momentum going last month with CM Punk.

The thing is, is that still translating in August? Are all of his t-shirts still selling as well as they did in July during his "farewell tour"?

Well, going off TV ratings, the answer is no. But that is no longer the measuring stick it used to be for WWE.

UFC has decent TV ratings, yet gets huge PPV buy-rates, so the two don't always correlate like they did 10 or 15 years ago.

While the momentum may have slowed just a bit on CM Punk, and the Summerslam PPV number has yet to be released, it still a good indication MITB had people interested.

Not just interested, but interested in paying $50 to see a three hour wrestling show. That is the key in all of this.

Are people willing to spend money to see Punk main event?

Well, his merchandise is selling great. His big PPV spotlight sold well. His hometown crowd jam-packed an arena.

All seems like great news to me...Now if only those ratings could back up his recent push, and Punk would be a made man right now in WWE.

I guess we will all have to wait and see.

UPDATE: PWTorch now reports the buyrate is closer to 200,000 buys, not 276,000. Still up from them last year but not by much...the official number will be out around November.
