WWE: Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena—Top 5 Reasons Del Rio Retains the Title

Justin WatryJun 7, 2018

We all know the match is official: Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship at Night of Champions next month from Buffalo.

While not their first meeting, this is definitely their biggest match against each other to date.

With that being said, I am strong on the belief that Del Rio leaves the PPV still the WWE champ. There are plenty of reason why, and I will list five of them today.

Counting the list down, starting at No. 5...

5. Things Are Just Getting Started

1 of 5

Yep, this feud is just beginning and is going to last a few months (at least).

There is absolutely no reason to switch the title in the opener of a long-term angle.

It may work in some cases, but it is rare where it would make sense. This is not one of those times. Changing the title now (in their first match) would make the rest of the feud dead. Dead!

4. Cena Does Not Need It...Yet

2 of 5

I still can't decide if WWE will have Cena vs. Rock for the WWE title at WrestleMania 28 or not. Personally, I am torn on what decision would be best...

In any case, there is no reason for Cena to have the title now. In a few months, probably. Mania time? Yeah, I guess..

Now? No.

3. The Future Is Now

3 of 5

The future is now.

There is no more waiting around for many of these stars (young or a little older) to be made, and WWE is trying their best to get them all over in due time.

Again, there is no more "next year" or even "next month" for some of these guys. They are all being thrown into major sink-or-swim situations, and Del Rio is next on the list...

2. More Options for Alberto Winning

4 of 5

This reminds me of SummerSlam 2011. There was no reason Christian would win, and he didn't.

Randy Orton winning the title back meant so many more options for the Blue Brand that it had to be done. This the same situation here.

Del Rio winning keeps many options open. More Cena matches? Punk? A new face steps up? Rey back from surgery down the line?

Again, Cena winning puts us make to square one.

1. WWE's Tour of Mexico Is in October

5 of 5

Whether people want to admit it or not, this is a major tour for WWE and their future.

The Hispanic market is growing for WWE right now, while the American market is decreasing.

Facts are facts, and WWE needs to put on the absolute best show possible come October for both Raw and SmackDown.

What better way for the company than have Alberto Del Rio return "home" as the reigning WWE Champion in the middle of a feud with the top star in the industry—John Cena?

Seems like a win-win to me...thoughts folks?
