Why Bill Belichick's Proposed New Special Teams Rules Make Sense

Adam ReiterJun 1, 2018

Bill Belichick has long been one of the most disliked people in the NFL—players, coaches and owners alike.

The reason he's not the most disliked person is because that title most likely belongs to his own quarterback, Tom Brady. Between the lame-duck success Belichick found with his sixth round quarterback-turned-future Hall of Famer and the "Spygate" incident, it's very hard to like Belichick and anything that is associated with him.

However, as reported recently on Yahoo! Sports, Belichick discussed his harsh dislike for some certain rules of the game and how they can be improved—something that other people may actually be on-board with.

"Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn't be in the game. I don't think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play. Let's move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Let them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you're just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20."

Moving the ball back to the 15 or 20-yard line would make extra points the same distance as a 30 or 35-yard field goal, which is a very respectable distance for an extra point.

On the other hand, Belichick's suggestion to eliminate kickoffs because of the new rule to move the ball up to the 35-yard line to create more touchbacks and fewer injuries is probably not as popular .

For as many touchbacks as there will be, there is still a need for special teams in the NFL. Simply put, it's the way that many of the 53 men who comprise a given team's roster make that roster. Eliminating it would not only erase the excitement of a possible kickoff return for a touchdown, but would eliminate the need for certain players on a roster.

Belichick did not comment on his views on the two-point conversion and whether or not that should be moved back as well, as it has been the same two yards from the end zone as the extra point has been since it was adopted by the NFL in 1994.
