WWE: Why Christian Is Better as a Contender Than He Is as Champion

David LevinJun 7, 2018

Sometimes, it is better to be the hunter than the hunted.

Maybe that is how Christian should look at things right now.

After losing the World Title to Randy Orton at SummerSlam, Christian may have been pushed back in the shuffle of contenders for the strap, but that certainly does not mean he is out of the running for a title shot.

The fact he lost the belt and can now refocus his energies on regaining the belt make him just as much a threat to capture gold again.

Here are some other reasons why it is good for "Captain Charisma" to look ahead and not back in his pursuit of success.

Champions Tend to Relax a Bit

1 of 8

It has been a theory in the past that when someone claims gold, they tend to relax a bit and lose their edge.

Christian can keep his eye on the prize, which will allow him to stay focused and help him reclaim what he thinks is his.

He Can Heal from His Past Feud and Come out Swining

The beauty of the chase is that when you have title matches, such as the one at SummerSlam, they are brutal and brilliant all at once.

Orton and Christian pushed each other to the highest level, which also leads to injuries and wear on the body and mind.

Not having the title means there may be a chance for rehabilitation of both factors, which makes the contender more dangerous.

He Can Continue with the "Disrespect Card" Angle

From the moment he lost the title four days after capturing it for the first time, Christian has been a whining baby who has claimed he gets not respect.

And for the most part, Teddy Long has made sure that looks to be about accurate.

But it only goes so far if you are champion. Christian cannot use the same angles and mantras if gold is around his waste.

He Can Feud with New Talent or Establish New Rivalries

4 of 8

This one might be a stretch, but if Christian is champion, more than likely he is only working with one key wrestler (Orton or Henry).

Being a contender means he needs to reprove himself, which also means we see him more often on screen or in PPV events trying to prove he deserves a shot at the title.

It Gives Us Hope He Will Eventually Become a Face Again

I am not the only one who thinks Christian's heel turn was a mixed bag.

He would walk out into the arena and the "peeps" would still cheer him. He needs more of an "edge" to him that makes him a hated man.

Christian's success with Edge did a lot to help vault him to superstar status and because of that, he is loved by fans even as a heel.

And since he is not a true heel like a Mark Henry of Alberto Del Rio, there is the idea he can always make the switch again.

It Also Let's Him Work on a Possible Tag Team Combination?

Go with me on this one.

The Miz and R-Truth are joining forces, undoubtedly to possibly be in the mix if a tag team division evolves from the new COO, Triple H.

Christian is one of the best tag team wrestlers EVER. And having the belt means he cannot display this talent if the tag team division should arise.

Others Will Soften Orton Up While He Is Champion

7 of 8

Randy Orton will face great competition in Mark Henry, Sheamus and Wade Barrett—not to mention, possibly Cody Rhodes and Daniel Bryan.

This may soften the big man up when he does face Christian again. This is a good thing. This is an opportunity knocking.

If Orton is injured or not on his "game," then Christian takes advantage of this and comes out on top.

And Finally... Because If He Is Champion, His Reign Will Be Shor-Lived

I think that in this day and age, there are too many champions that change titles like they change their clothing.

Christian is not a long-term champion because he does not have the stroke like an Orton, or a Cena, or even a Punk.

Christian is elevated to superstar and top-card status because of his earlier success. Putting the title on him for a long period of time does not draw like other wrestlers. His shortlived
